href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/washington-post-staff-reduction-layoffs-cuts-923f87d4bd319c8a64b278165d0a6e27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced sweeping layoffs<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday, <strong>eliminating around one-third of its staff.<\/strong>\u00a0Its\u00a0sports, local and foreign\u00a0desks were\u00a0among the hardest\u00a0hit.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Executive\u00a0Editor Matt Murray\u00a0described\u00a0the cuts as\u00a0<strong>necessary for the stability of the company, <\/strong>citing\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/04\/business\/media\/washington-post-layoffs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">steep decline\u00a0in\u00a0online traffic<\/a>\u00a0amid the rise of generative artificial intelligence, among other factors.\u00a0Meanwhile, many employees and former leaders at the paper\u00a0<strong>condemned the\u00a0layoffs,<\/strong>\u00a0with some\u00a0further criticizing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/annals-of-communications\/how-jeff-bezos-brought-down-the-washington-post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decisions made by owner Jeff Bezos<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/feature\/news-media-tracker\/the_washington_post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research Center survey conducted in March 2025<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>12% of all U.S. adults\u00a0regularly get news from The Washington Post, <\/strong>including 7% of Republicans and 18% of Democrats.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udea8 <strong>New from Pew Research About one-in-ten U.S. adults say they often (2%) or sometimes (7%)\u00a0get news\u00a0from AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini.\u00a0<strong>Most Americans (75%) say they never get news\u00a0from\u00a0AI chatbots.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcca\u00a0<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s chart comes from a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/04\/28\/americans-largely-foresee-ai-having-negative-effects-on-news-journalists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>\u00a0that asked\u00a0Americans\u00a0<strong>how they think AI will impact news. <\/strong>About half\u00a0expect AI will have a very (24%)\u00a0or somewhat\u00a0(26%) negative impact on the news people\u00a0get\u00a0in the U.S. over the next 20 years.
