Much of this reporting was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/05\/business\/media\/hannah-natanson-washington-post-pulitzer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">led by Hannah Natanson<\/a>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/12\/24\/trump-federal-government-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relied on confidential sources inside the government<\/a>. The FBI searched Natanson\u2019s home and seized her devices in January in an attempt to investigate a government contractor who was suspected of leaking information.<br><br>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/10\/09\/most-americans-see-a-place-for-anonymous-sources-in-news-stories-but-not-all-the-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a> from 2020, <strong>most Americans see a place for anonymous sources in news stories,<\/strong> including a two-thirds majority who said it\u2019s acceptable to use them only in special cases and 15% who said it is always acceptable to use them. About one-in-five (18%) said the use of anonymous sources in news stories is <em>never <\/em>acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udea8 <strong>New from Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four-in-ten U.S. adults \u2013 including half of those under 50 \u2013 <strong>get health and wellness information from social media influencers and podcasts,<\/strong> according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/data-labs\/2026\/05\/07\/moms-coaches-doctors-entrepreneurs-who-are-americas-health-and-wellness-influencers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new Pew Research Center study<\/a> released today. Similarly, 38% said people are not very or not at all <strong>free to say what they want<\/strong> in France, the highest share across 10 European countries surveyed. French adults who say there is not complete freedom of speech in their country are much less likely to express <strong>satisfaction with the way democracy is working there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcca\u00a0<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s chart comes from a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2026\/04\/15\/teens-experiences-on-tiktok-instagram-and-snapchat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent Pew Research Center report<\/a> comparing teens\u2019 experiences on <strong>TikTok,<\/strong> <strong>Instagram <\/strong>and <strong>Snapchat.<\/strong> When we asked teens who use these platforms why they do so, three reasons rose to the top: entertainment, keeping in touch with friends and family, and connecting with others who share their interests.
