{"id":96649,"date":"2006-01-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2006-01-17T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2006\/01\/17\/is-eleanor-rigby-online\/"},"modified":"2024-04-14T04:18:02","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T09:18:02","slug":"is-eleanor-rigby-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2006\/01\/17\/is-eleanor-rigby-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Eleanor Rigby Online?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent <i>First Monday<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/firstmonday.org\/issues\/issue10_12\/brabazon\/\">article<\/a> by Tara Brabazon knits together a collection of data from the U.S., Australia, and the United Kingdom to make some interesting observations and arguments about the \u201cgreying of the World Wide Web\u201d and the potential for bringing isolated seniors (the Eleanor Rigbys of the world) into closer contact with the wired world.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Australian data shows that older women (age 65+) are less likely than older men to go online, which is also true of their American counterparts. In her report, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/PPF\/r\/171\/report_display.asp\">\u201cHow Women and Men Use the Internet,\u201d<\/a> Deborah Fallows reported that 34% of men age 65+ go online, compared to 21% of women in that age group (see chart, page 3).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Brabazon\u2019s article is a window into Australia\u2019s unique situation as well as a good example of how the Pew Internet &amp; American Life Project\u2019s data is used to frame an international
