{"id":95778,"date":"2010-02-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-11T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2010\/02\/11\/vala2010-connections-content-conversations\/"},"modified":"2024-04-14T04:17:44","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T09:17:44","slug":"vala2010-connections-content-conversations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2010\/02\/11\/vala2010-connections-content-conversations\/","title":{"rendered":"VALA2010: Connections Content Conversations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bad weather and airline woes kept\u00a0Director <a title=\"Lee Rainie's bio\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/Experts\/Lee-Rainie.aspx\">Lee Rainie<\/a>\u00a0from traveling to Melbourne, Australia\u00a0to address the\u00a0VALA \u2013 Libraries, Technology, and the Future conference.\u00a0In\u00a0<a href=\"~\/media\/Files\/Presentations\/2010\/Feb\/Lee-Rainie-VALA-paper-1-26-10.pdf\">this speech<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0these slides (below) for his talk, Lee discusses\u00a0the democratization of media and the rise of user-generated content. <\/p>\n\n<div>\n<p>Lee\u00a0argues that the creation of personal media is a social networking activity. As a consequence, there are several new kinds of activities that have become popular thanks to the growth of social media: 1) networked individuals can produce content online that helps them expand their social network and increase their social standing by building an audience; 2) they can use social media to create social posses to solve problems; and 3) they can construct just-in-time-just-like-me support groups through telling their stories and building archives or links to others\u2019 content and 4) they can reshape the media environment with a new set of interests, civic values, and news sensibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to traditional media makers, these new creators frame information in new ways and adopt a different tone in their creations. Lee\u00a0says studies from the Pew Research Center\u2019s Internet Project and the Project for Excellence in Journalism mirror the material from the United Kingdom that prompted William Dutton of the Oxford Internet Institute to argue that social media creators constitute a Fifth Estate of civic actors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p
