{"id":95522,"date":"2010-11-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-11-17T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2010\/11\/17\/cnn-do-tweets-change-your-behavior\/"},"modified":"2024-04-14T04:17:41","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T09:17:41","slug":"cnn-do-tweets-change-your-behavior","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2010\/11\/17\/cnn-do-tweets-change-your-behavior\/","title":{"rendered":"CNN: Do tweets change your behavior?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A CNN\u00a0column by Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2010\/OPINION\/11\/16\/fowler.christakis.tweeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Do tweets change your behavior<\/a>?&#8221;, has prompted a new round of discussion about the role of online social networks in American life.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article details an experiment which supposedly found that I was more influential on Twitter than <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Alyssa_Milano\">Alyssa Milano <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/timoreilly\">Tim O&#8217;Reilly<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;m flattered, but I sincerely doubt that (and you can read in the comments or\u00a0in <a href=\"http:\/\/eekim.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/christakis-gladwell-and-catalyzing-movements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this thoughtful essay<\/a>\u00a0why the experiment was flawed).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I&#8217;m really interested in, though, is the basic premise of Christakis and Fowler&#8217;s recent research:\u00a0<strong>Networks magnify whatever they are seeded with, for good or for ill.<\/strong> Behavior change, including altruistic behavior, spreads. The more help you get, the more likely you will be to help someone else.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s where Pew Internet&#8217;s research comes in:\u00a0 What is the reach and scope of online social networks?
