{"id":94641,"date":"2013-04-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-04-08T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2013\/04\/08\/veteran-internet-use-and-engagement-with-health-information-online\/"},"modified":"2024-04-14T04:17:32","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T09:17:32","slug":"veteran-internet-use-and-engagement-with-health-information-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2013\/04\/08\/veteran-internet-use-and-engagement-with-health-information-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Veteran Internet Use and Engagement With Health Information Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New analysis of our <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/Shared-Content\/Data-Sets\/2010\/September-2010--Health.aspx\">2010 health survey <\/a>results show differences among three populations: veterans of the U.S. military who obtain their health care within the Veterans Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA); veterans who are outside the VA system; non-veterans.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The full article is behind the pay wall for <em>Military Medicine<\/em>, but the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ingentaconnect.com\/content\/amsus\/zmm\/2013\/00000178\/00000004\/art00021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">abstract <\/a>is available and I thought I&#8217;d summarize some key points below:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Veterans in the VA system use the internet less frequently than do other veterans.<\/li>\n<li>When they do access the internet for health, veterans in the VA system are more likely than other veterans to look for information related to Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, memory loss, or dementia.<\/li>\n<li>Since the study is based on a phone survey, it may not be representative of all veterans because of the number of current homeless veterans who do not have a landline or cell phone. However, there are enough intriguing patterns to suggest the need for further research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conclusion is worth quoting in full:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"full is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Veterans may be considered a vulnerable population in the context of the digital divide, yet results from this study indicate that there is a potential to engage veterans with health-related services via the internet. It is important to continue to explore the needs of veterans regarding health information to help improve patient-centered care and help veterans better manage their health.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many thanks to the lead authors of this article, who deserve the credit for the analysis:\u00a0Thomas K.
