Our major 2013 survey found that <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/next-america\/\">younger generations<\/a> are much more racially and ethnically diverse. They differ in other ways as well, particularly in terms of where they live and their general life stage. And though we cannot explore younger Americans\u2019 household income levels in great detail due to data limitations, our <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2014\/03\/13\/library-engagement-typology\/\">library engagement typology found<\/a> that Americans\u2019 relationships with public libraries are part of their broader information and social landscapes, as people who have extensive economic, social, technological, and cultural resources are also more likely to use and value libraries as part of those networks.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2014\/09\/10\/younger-americans-and-public-libraries\/pi_2014-09-10_younger-americans-libraries_02\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11906\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ededed\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ededed;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"419\" height=\"349\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/09\/PI_2014-09-10_younger-americans-libraries_02.png?resize=419,349 419w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-118592 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/09\/PI_2014-09-10_younger-americans-libraries_02.png\" alt=\"Employment status\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2014\/03\/13\/library-engagement-typology\/\">library typology<\/a> also found that life stage and special circumstances are linked to increased library use and higher engagement with information, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2014\/03\/13\/high-engagement\/\">most highly engaged groups<\/a> in our typology contained higher proportion of parents, students, and job seekers.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have previously examined <a href=\"http:\/\/libraries.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2013\/05\/01\/parents-children-libraries-and-reading\/\">parents\u2019 closer relationships with libraries<\/a>. The 2013 survey also found that students and job seekers are more likely to have used a library in the past year overall. However, these groups (though potentially overlapping) differ in the value they place on various library services. For instance, students\u2019 higher rates of library use are not necessarily paired with higher reported reliance on library services, while job seekers are significantly more likely to place a high value on many of the resources we asked about\u2014starting with job search assistance. Among those who are currently looking for a job, 47% say that getting help finding or applying for a job at the library is &#8220;very important&#8221; to them and their family.
