However, for lower-income Americans and those who are members of communities of color, libraries have a special role as places to learn new job skills, explore new digital technologies and provide services to them or their community.<\/p>\n\n<figure><img data-dominant-color=\"f1f1f0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f1f1f0;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14473 alignright not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2015\/09\/2015-09-15_libraries_3-02.png\" alt=\"Support Among Some Groups for Libraries Helping Business and Immigrants\" width=\"415\" height=\"419\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to economic opportunity, African Americans, Hispanics and those in households with an annual income under $30,000 are more likely to say libraries help people find jobs or pursue job training. Hispanics, in particular, are more likely than the overall population to say libraries help \u201ca lot\u201d or \u201csomewhat\u201d in job pursuits or training by a 58% to 48% margin.<\/p>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14474\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2015\/09\/2015-09-15_libraries_3-03.png\" alt=\"Some Groups are Especially Likely to Say Libraries Help People Learn About new Technologies\" width=\"309\" height=\"418\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These groups are also generally more likely to say libraries should \u201cdefinitely\u201d create programs that encourage business development or help immigrants or first-generation Americans. As noted, Hispanics feel strongly about libraries\u2019 role in services for immigrants or first-generation Americans.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2015\/09\/15\/libraries-at-the-crossroads\/2015-09-15_libraries_3-04\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14475\"><img data-dominant-color=\"aa8369\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #aa8369;\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" class=\"wp-image-14475 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2015\/09\/2015-09-15_libraries_3-04.png\" alt=\"A Share of the Population Believes Libraries Help People Decide What Information to Trust\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pattern also carries over when people think about the library\u2019s role in helping learn about new technologies, find health information or how to decide what information to trust \u2013 particularly when focusing on the share of people who say libraries help \u201ca lot\u201d in different realms.<\/p>\n\n<figure><img data-dominant-color=\"f1f1f0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f1f1f0;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14476 alignright not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2015\/09\/2015-09-15_libraries_3-05.png\" alt=\"Hispanics are the Most Likely to say a Library Closing Would Have a Major Impact on Them\" width=\"309\" height=\"415\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With respect to health searches, low-income Americans are more likely to say libraries help \u201ca lot\u201d in that area (44%), compared with 36% of all respondents. African Americans and Hispanics also exceed the average.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For learning about new technologies, Hispanics and low-income Americans are more likely than the typical respondent to see libraries helping \u201ca lot\u201d as they explore gadgets and applications, with African Americans above the norm to a lesser extent.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, with respect to trust and information online, Hispanics, African Americans and low-income Americans each see libraries helping people discern what information is trustworthy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is little surprise, then, that lower-income Americans, blacks and Hispanics are more likely to say that closing their local public library would have a <em>major impact<\/em> on them or their family. About half (49%) of all Hispanics say closing the library would have a major impact on them or their family \u2013 far more than the 32% figure for all respondents.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Americans use of public libraries and generally positive attitudes about them cut broadly across all demographics surveyed.
