But such connectedness also creates exploitable vulnerabilities. As automobiles, medical devices, smart TVs, manufacturing equipment and other tools and infrastructure are networked, is it likely that attacks, hacks or ransomware concerns in the next decade will cause significant numbers of people to decide to disconnect, or will the trend toward greater connectivity of objects and people continue unabated?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some 1,201 responded to this nonscientific canvassing: 15% of these particular respondents said significant numbers would disconnect and 85% chose the option that most people will move more deeply into connected life.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants were asked to explain their answers and were offered the following prompts to consider:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is the most likely kind of physical or human damage that will occur when things are networked?<\/li>\n<li>How might governments and technologists respond to make things more secure and safe?<\/li>\n<li>Is it possible to network physical objects in such a way that they will generally remain safe for the vast majority most of the time?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;predictions-from-experts-aboutonline-connectivity-in-2026&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" id=\"predictions-from-experts-aboutonline-connectivity-in-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: center\">Predictions from experts about\nonline connectivity\u00a0in 2026<\/h3>\n\n<p>[shareable url=&#8221;https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2017\/06\/06\/the-internet-of-things-connectivity-binge-what-are-the-implications\/&#8221;
