{"id":90063,"date":"2009-12-07T00:00:01","date_gmt":"2009-12-07T05:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2009\/12\/07\/lead-newsmakers\/"},"modified":"2024-04-14T04:16:20","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T09:16:20","slug":"lead-newsmakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2009\/12\/07\/lead-newsmakers\/","title":{"rendered":"Lead Newsmakers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another metric by which we can examine news about Hispanics is to consider who was making the news.\u00a0 What specific people\u2014and more specifically, what people of Hispanic heritage\u2014drove these news stories?<\/p>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/legacy\/u36\/Hisp_Lead_Newsmakers.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"350\" align=\"right\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once again, Sonia Sotomayor was the person most often at the center of coverage.\u00a0 Within all news coverage containing prominent references to Hispanics, she was the lead newsmaker in 29.7% of these stories.\u00a0 She also figured prominently in the larger news universe, with her nomination making up 1.5% of the stories in the total NCI. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next-leading newsmaker among stories containing significant Hispanic references was Barack Obama, at 7.0%.\u00a0 Most of these stories dealt with foreign affairs, such as his April trip to Mexico or his historic handshake with Hugo Ch\u00e1vez at the April Summit of the Americas.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only other people to garner even one percent of lead newmaker status in these stories were leaders of Latin American countries that figured prominently in the news from February through August: ousted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya (1.7%), Venezuelan president Hugo Ch\u00e1vez (1.4%), and Mexican president Felipe Calder\u00f3n (1.1%).\u00a0 <\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another metric by which we can examine news about Hispanics is to consider who was making the news.\u00a0 What specific people\u2014and more specifically, what people of Hispanic heritage\u2014drove these news stories?
