Of the more than 3,000 stories included in this study, 63% are from digital websites, 27% from television and 10% from radio. It is important to note that some differences in coverage could be tied to the platform of the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two variables that seemed they could have some element of format at play were examined: number of source types and the use of direct tweets. The tables below display coverage for these two variables, in addition to tone across news platforms, and then outlet group within each platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, stories on a digital platform were overall much more likely to name multiple source types than stories from both television and radio. Looking at just digital content, though, three-quarters of stories from outlets with a left-leaning audience cited two or more sources, 17 percentage points higher those from outlets with a right-leaning audience (58%). The same pattern holds for both television and radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
