As of 2016, 21% of Americans age 12 or older say they have listened to a podcast in the past month, reflecting steady incremental growth since 2013 \u2013 when this share was 12%.<\/p>\n\n<p>[chart id=&#8221;55558&#8243; title=&#8221;Percentage of Americans who have listened to a podcast in the past month has increased steadily since 2013&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That percentage rises to 36% when it comes to those who have <em>ever<\/em> listened to a podcast \u2013 double the share who had done so in 2008, according to Edison. And, reflective of the country\u2019s shift to mobile more broadly, mobile devices (smartphones, tablets or other portable devices) are increasingly preferred over desktops or laptops for podcast listening. In 2016, 64% of Americans age 12 or older who have\u00a0ever listened to a podcast said they were listening \u201cmost often\u201d on a mobile device, compared to 55% in 2015. Conversely, 34% said in 2016 that they listen most often on a desktop or laptop computer, while 42% said this in 2015.<\/p>\n\n<p>[chart id=&#8221;55561&#8243; title=&#8221;About one-third of Americans now say they have listened to a podcast&#8221;]<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, even though more people are listening to podcasts, it is worth noting that the medium accounts for only a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2016\/04\/left-on-the-dial-with-young-people-trading-amfm-for-streaming-will-radio-find-a-home-in-your-next-car\/\">very small sliver<\/a> of the share of time that Americans spend listening to all audio sources. According to Edison Research data from their Share of Ear Survey conducted in the fourth quarter of 2015, only 2% of all audio listening is spent using podcasts, compared to 54% of time that is spent listening to AM\/FM radio.<\/p>\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;familiarity-with-podcasting&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" id=\"familiarity-with-podcasting\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Familiarity with podcasting<\/h3>\n\n<p>[chart id=&#8221;55562&#8243; title=&#8221;Familiarity with podcasting remains flat&#8221;]<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;podcast-hosting-and-downloads&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" id=\"podcast-hosting-and-downloads\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Podcast hosting and downloads<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are no widely accepted estimates of the total number of podcasts produced in the U.S., including those that focus on news and public affairs. However, publicly available data from one of the largest commercial podcast hosting companies, Libsyn, continues to indicate an upward trend in both the number of podcast shows hosted and the number of download requests over the past four years. In 2015, the company hosted 28,000 shows, an increase over the 22,000 shows hosted in 2014 and the 16,000 shows during 2013.<\/p>\n\n<p>[chart id=&#8221;55563&#8243; title=&#8221;Number of podcasts hosted by Libsyn shows steady year over year increase&#8221;]<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Libsyn also reported an increase in the number of podcast download requests made in 2015, a number that has more than doubled since 2012. In 2015, Libsyn had 3.3 billion requests for downloads, up from 2.6 billion in 2014, 1.9 billion in 2013 and 1.6 billion in 2012.<\/p>\n\n<p>[chart id=&#8221;55565&#8243; title=&#8221;Total number of Libsyn download requests increases&#8221;]<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Libsyn\u2019s data for downloads by preferred type of device tracks with the mobile preferences reflected in Edison\u2019s survey data: 69% of podcast downloads in 2015 were requested from mobile devices, while just 31% were requested from desktop and laptop computers. In 2014, 63% of podcast downloads were requested from mobile devices, compared with 37% from desktops and laptops.<\/p>\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;economics-and-news-investment&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" id=\"economics-and-news-investment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Economics and News Investment<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as the audience for podcasts is smaller than that of other media, the business of podcasting is too. In 2015, advertising spending on podcasts was estimated to be around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/podcasting-is-finally-attracting-real-money\/\">$34 million dollars<\/a> \u2013 a small drop in the bucket compared to most other major media sectors. While advertising constitutes the dominant revenue stream for the medium, a <a href=\"http:\/\/towcenter.org\/research\/guide-to-podcasting\/\">2015 report from the Tow Center for Digital Journalism<\/a> portrayed the current period as one in which podcasters are actively experimenting with a wide range of revenue streams. Among the models identified are various forms of direct support through platforms such as Patreon or Kickstarter, grants from foundations, subscription or \u201cfreemium\u201d models, and staging live events such as conferences or webinars.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the podcast industry is growing, some observers and industry insiders say that the <a href=\"http:\/\/jacobsmedia.com\/the-race-to-dominate-the-world-of-podcasting\/\">lack of better metrics<\/a> is acting as a brake on more rapid revenue growth. The main way a podcast\u2019s audience is generally measured is through downloads. Download data, however, is limited in that the statistics do not identify if the podcast downloaded was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2016\/02\/public-radio-staffers-across-the-u-s-lay-out-new-guidelines-for-podcast-audience-measurement\/\">actually listened to<\/a>, either in part or in its entirety, or how many different people may have listened to the podcast. The limitations of these download statistics have had downstream <a href=\"http:\/\/digiday.com\/platforms\/measurement-challenge-podcast-advertising\/\">implications for advertisers<\/a>, who need audience data to drive buying decisions \u2013 as well for podcast producers who could potentially attract more advertisers and further grow their audience if there were more granular data on actual listenership.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to these limitations, a group comprised of staff from several public radio stations and networks <a href=\"http:\/\/observer.com\/2016\/02\/what-is-a-download-defining-podcast-metrics-reveals-industry-faultlines\/\">released a report<\/a> in February 2016 proposing <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1qMORNRNyAR3L_03VYlvZK9dpKMk_d7pUxCnJfeKgVn0\/edit\">new standards<\/a> for defining a \u201cdownload.\u201d The report was an attempt to identify and address a number of specific ways that existing technologies could artificially inflate download statistics \u2013 such as bots or progressive downloading (a downloading process that allows a user to begin to listen to the podcast before the download is complete and may result in multiple calls from a device for the file).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in April 2016, Nielsen announced that later in the year it will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insideradio.com\/free\/nielsen-to-add-on-demand-audio-podcast-numbers\/article_3f4afa68-0800-11e6-a277-b765e0f61bb6.html\">begin to measure on-demand audio and podcasting<\/a> as a part of its Digital Audio Ratings Service. <a href=\"http:\/\/adage.com\/article\/media\/podcast-network-panoply-unveils-advertising-platform\/302242\/\">Panoply<\/a> \u2013 the podcast network of Slate \u2013 launched Megaphone, a content management system that can gather more granular data on <a href=\"https:\/\/megaphone.fm\/\">listenership<\/a>. The use of a format <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2015\/11\/podcasting-in-2015-feels-a-lot-like-blogging-circa-2004-exciting-evolving-and-trouble-for-incumbents\/\">other than MP3s<\/a> \u2013 such as that developed by <a href=\"http:\/\/towcenter.org\/interview-with-caitlin-thompson-acast\/\">Acast<\/a> \u2013 is capable of delivering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3054877\/most-creative-people\/beyond-mail-kimp-the-future-of-podcast-advertising\">advanced metrics<\/a> for advertisers, but it is a more expensive platform for them. And, it is possible that <a href=\"http:\/\/jacobsmedia.com\/the-race-to-dominate-the-world-of-podcasting\/\">Apple and Google<\/a> may become much more dominant in the podcast advertising space.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Measurement concerns notwithstanding, however, many news organizations \u2013 both large and small, legacy and non-legacy \u2013 moved ahead with increased investments in podcasting during 2015 and early 2016. While the \u201cSerial Effect\u201d may have encouraged the creation and expansion of more podcasts, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/business-and-finance\/2015\/12\/15\/10126144\/serial-podcast-huge-hit\">several other factors<\/a> have also converged to further encourage media organizations to expand into the podcasting space. Technologies \u2013 such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/business-and-finance\/2015\/12\/15\/10126144\/serial-podcast-huge-hit\">apps and platforms<\/a> \u2013 have made podcasts easier and more convenient to listen to, and business models have evolved to better translate podcasts into sources of revenue. Podcasts are being leveraged by legacy organizations to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2016\/01\/all-the-news-thats-fit-to-podcast-newspapers-try-out-audio\/\">cross-promote content<\/a> or by any kind of news outlet to offer a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalism.co.uk\/news\/how-5-news-organisations-are-bringing-podcasts-into-the-newsroom-\/s2\/a565974\/\">deeper dive<\/a>. And more broadly, the on-demand format of podcasts offers consumers an additional way to access news and information in a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2013\/10\/16\/12-trends-shaping-digital-news\/\">changing media landscape<\/a>, while offering media organizations a potential new avenue to grow audience.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among established, legacy media organizations investing in podcasting:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The New York Times, which in March 2016 announced the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2016\/03\/the-new-york-times-launches-a-podcast-team-to-create-a-new-batch-of-wide-reaching-shows\/\">creation of a podcast team<\/a> focusing on news and opinion programming;<\/li>\n<li>Public radio broadcaster WNYC, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/13\/business\/media\/wnyc-to-open-new-podcast-division.html?_r=2\">announced in October 2015 its plan to raise $15 million in funds for a new podcast division<\/a> (for more on the role of podcasts within the public radio world, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2016\/06\/15\/public-broadcasting-fact-sheet\/\">public broadcasting<\/a> fact sheet);<\/li>\n<li>The Wall Street Journal, which introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2015\/12\/08\/793848\/0\/en\/Wall-Street-Journal-Introduces-WSJ-Podcasts.html\">WSJ Podcasts<\/a> in December 2o15;<\/li>\n<li>And on the local front, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cjr.org\/united_states_project\/three_tickets_des_moines_register.php\">the Des Moines Register<\/a>, which turned to long-form narrative podcasts in order to explore one story in depth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, digital startups and newer media organizations investing in podcasting included:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Slate, which launched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poynter.org\/2015\/slate-launches-panoply-a-podcast-platform\/322953\/\">the podcasting platform Panoply<\/a> in February 2015 in partnership with several other media organizations, including The New York Times, WBUR and The Huffington Post;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/cmo\/2015\/03\/24\/buzzfeed-podcasts\/\">Buzzfeed, which launched its first two podcasts<\/a> in March 2015 \u2013 and launched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/detail\/buzzfeed-launches-tell-show-and-cheryl-strayed-tel-232222\">The Tell Show<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/katherinemiller\/introducing-the-buzzfeed-politics-podcast-no-one-knows-anyth?utm_term=.jpxOxPEb35#.qkGjBLvJm1\">No One Knows Anything<\/a> in 2016;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2015\/05\/knight-foundation-invests-1-million-in-creator-driven-podcast-collective-radiotopia\/\">Radiotopia<\/a>, which received a grant from the Knight Foundation for $1 million to fund new stories and support a pilot fund;<\/li>\n<li>Gimlet \u2013 a podcast network that launched in 2014 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2015\/12\/hot-pod-panoplys-parent-company-takes-a-stake-in-gimlet-media\/\">attracted $6 million in new funding<\/a> in December 2015 to fuel expansion. Plans for the funds included new studios, an increase from four to 12 podcasts and a tripling of staff over the next couple of years;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/digiday.com\/publishers\/local-podcast-networks-hope-small-beautiful\/\">Goat Rodeo<\/a> \u2013 a podcast network focusing on local issues around the Washington, D.C., area \u2013 launched in October 2015.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h4 id=\"more-data\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Data<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/media-indicators\/podcasting-number-of-podcasts-produced-2009-to-2013\/\">Number of podcasts produced 2009 to 2013<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/media-indicators\/podcasting-npr-podcast-users\/\">NPR podcast
