Connecticut<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1940)\nIn overturning a conviction for disturbing the peace, held that the Free Exercise Clause applies to state as well as federal actions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a title=\"Minersville School District v. Gobitis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1901-1939\/1939\/1939_690\">Minersville School District v. Gobitis<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1940)\nRuled that the Free Exercise Clause did not give religiously motivated public school children the right to opt out of a compulsory flag-salute ceremony.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a title=\"West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1940-1949\/1942\/1942_591\">West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1943)\nOverruled <em>Gobitis<\/em> and recognized the right not to participate in a flag-salute ceremony based on the right of free speech and worship.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a title=\"U.S. v. Ballard\" href=\"http:\/\/caselaw.lp.findlaw.com\/scripts\/getcase.pl?navby=case&amp;court=us&amp;vol=322&amp;invol=78\"><em><strong>U.S. v. Ballard<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (1944)\nIn a case involving a faith healer who claimed to possess supernatural healing powers, ruled that government cannot question the truth or validity of someone\u2019s religious beliefs but is free to examine whether such beliefs are sincerely held.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a title=\"Braunfeld v. Brown\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1960-1969\/1960\/1960_67\">Braunfeld v. Brown<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1961)\nRejected an argument from Jewish businessmen who observed a Saturday Sabbath and opposed a law that required businesses to close on Sundays.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a title=\"Sherbert v.Verner\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1960-1969\/1962\/1962_526\">Sherbert v. Verner<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1963)\nRuled that a South Carolina unemployment policy forcing an employee to choose between her faith\u2019s Saturday Sabbath and eligibility for unemployment benefits violated the Free Exercise Clause.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a title=\"Wisconsin v.Yoder\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1970-1979\/1971\/1971_70_110\">Wisconsin v. Yoder<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1972)\nRuled that the Free Exercise Clause exempted the adolescent children of the Old Order Amish from compulsory school attendance laws.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a title=\"Bob Jones University v. United States\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1980-1989\/1982\/1982_81_3\">Bob Jones University v. United States<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1983)\nRejected a First Amendment challenge to the Internal Revenue Service\u2019s policy of denying tax-exempt status to nonprofit educational institutions that had racially discriminatory policies.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a title=\"Goldman v.Weinberger\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1980-1989\/1985\/1985_84_1097\">Goldman v. Weinberger<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1986)\nRuled that the Free Exercise Clause did not exempt a Jewish Air Force captain from the rule that forbade the wearing of any headgear indoors.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a title=\"O\u2019Lone v. Estate of Shabazz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1980-1989\/1986\/1986_85_1722\">O\u2019Lone v. Estate of Shabazz<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1987)\nRuled that security considerations provided a reasonable basis for restricting prison inmate attendance at a Muslim religious service.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a title=\"Employment Division v. Smith\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1980-1989\/1987\/1987_86_946\">Employment Division v. Smith<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1990)\nUpheld the denial of unemployment compensation to two Native American drug rehabilitation counselors who had been dismissed because they had ingested the hallucinogen peyote as part of a religious ritual.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a title=\"Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye v. City of Hialeah\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1990-1999\/1992\/1992_91_948\">Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye v. City of Hialeah<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1993)\nRuled that the city of Hialeah\u2019s ordinances on the treatment of animals discriminated against the Santerian faith and its practice of animal sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a title=\"City of Boerne v. Flores\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1990-1999\/1996\/1996_95_2074\">City of Boerne v. Flores<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1997)\nRuled that Congress lacks the power to substitute its judgment for that of the federal judiciary on the norms of religious liberty that states must obey.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a title=\"Locke v.
