Caldor, Inc.<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1985)\nInvalidated a Connecticut law that provided Sabbath observers with an absolute right not to work on their Sabbath because the law imposed unreasonable costs on employers and other employees.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><a title=\"Corporation of Presiding Bishops v. Amos\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1980-1989\/1986\/1986_86_179\">Corporation of Presiding Bishops v. Amos<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (1987)\nUpheld an exemption for religious organizations from a federal law prohibiting religious discrimination in the workplace because the law had imposed a burden on religious organizations that it did not impose on secular ones.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><a title=\"Employment Division v. Smith\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1980-1989\/1987\/1987_86_946\">Employment Division v. Smith<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (1990)\nUpheld the denial of unemployment compensation to two Native American drug rehabilitation counselors who had been dismissed because they had ingested the hallucinogen peyote as part of a religious ritual.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><a title=\"Board of Education of Kiryas Joel v. Grumet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1990-1999\/1993\/1993_93_517\">Board of Education of Kiryas Joel v. Grumet<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (1994)\nInvalidated New York\u2019s creation of a special public-school district for a village populated primarily by an Orthodox Jewish community.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><a title=\"City of Boerne v.
