Religion played an important role in bringing about this change: Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu earned the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his outspoken opposition to apartheid, and many of South Africa&#8217;s churches were active in efforts to end the practice. Data from a 10-country <a href=\"\/Christian\/Evangelical-Protestant-Churches\/Spirit-and-Power.aspx\">survey<\/a> of Pentecostals conducted by the Pew Research Center&#8217;s Forum on Religion &amp; Public Life in 2006 provides estimates of the religious affiliation of South Africa&#8217;s urban population.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Religion in South Africa\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/07\/safrica.gif\" width=\"550\" height=\"362\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"small\">Data from the Pew Forum&#8217;s <a href=\"\/Christian\/Evangelical-Protestant-Churches\/Spirit-and-Power.aspx\">Spirit and Power: A 10-Country Survey of Pentecostals<\/a>.<\/span><span class=\"small\">The survey was conducted in South Africa from May 11-27, 2006, among 800 respondents.
