wp-block-paragraph\">If you are Jewish, odds are that you live in Israel or the United States. Four out of\u00a0every five Jews in the world live in these two countries, with approximately 6 million Jews\u00a0in each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;differing-perspectives&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" id=\"differing-perspectives\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Differing perspectives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center has surveyed Jewish adults in both places, and has found\u00a0deep bonds\u00a0between them. Nevertheless, their experiences and perspectives are very different.\u00a0For instance, we asked <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2016\/03\/08\/israels-religiously-divided-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jews in Israel<\/a> to describe, in their own words, the biggest long-term problem facing their country. In fact, Jews in\u00a0Israel are much less optimistic than Jews in the United States about the prospects for a\u00a0two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Overall,\u00a0however, Israeli Jews lean toward the position that settlements help Israel\u2019s security, while\u00a0a plurality of American Jews think settlements hurt Israel\u2019s own security. Jews represent about 2% of the U.S.\u00a0adult population of roughly 300 million people. Only about one-third of American Jews\u00a0say that either \u201call\u201d (5%) or \u201cmost\u201d (27%) of their close friends are Jewish. The vast majority\u00a0of Israeli Jews say that either all (67%) or most (31%) of their close friends are Jewish, and\u00a0nearly all married Jews in Israel have Jewish spouses. There\u2019s also very little conversion\u00a0between major religious groups in Israel, while in the United States, religious switching is\u00a0remarkably common, including many U.S. adults who have drifted away from organized\u00a0religion altogether.\u00a0In our 2013 survey, one out of every five Jewish Americans said they do not identify with\u00a0any religion, even though they also said they had at least one Jewish parent or were raised\u00a0Jewish, and they consider themselves Jewish in other ways aside from religion (such as\u00a0culturally or ethnically). Nor are they unchanging in their\u00a0religious identity. Indeed, there is a fair amount of movement among different categories\u00a0of Jews in Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some Israeli Jews are raised in a largely secular environment but choose to follow Jewish\u00a0religious law (halakha) later in life. Such a person is known in Hebrew as a \u201cbaal teshuva,\u201d\u00a0or \u201cone who returns.\u201d But more Israeli Jews move in the other direction: They were raised\u00a0in religious families but embrace a more secular lifestyle as adults. They are sometimes\u00a0called \u201cdatlash,\u201d short for \u201cdati le\u2019she\u2019avar\u201d (which translates as \u201cformerly religious\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most American Jews are part of organized Jewish denominations or \u201cstreams,\u201d which\u00a0include the relatively large Reform and Conservative movements as well as Orthodox\u00a0Judaism. In Israel, only about 5% of Jews identify as either Reform or Conservative.\u00a0Instead, Jews in Israel generally place themselves into one of four informal categories of\u00a0Jewish religious identity. Many are\u00a0indeed firmly secular \u2013 a majority of Hilonim say they never pray or go to synagogue, and 44%\u00a0say they do not believe in God. But, nonetheless, many Hilonim take part in\u00a0Jewish rituals that are now deeply embedded in Israeli culture. They are highly\u00a0observant of Jewish law but also strongly integrated into Israeli society (for instance, by\u00a0serving in the Israeli military). Many \u2013 though by no means all \u2013 Datiim describe\u00a0themselves as \u201creligious Zionists\u201d and hold political views that entwine religious identity\u00a0and nationalism. Most do not serve in the Israeli military, and many\u00a0Haredi men remain outside the workforce, instead receiving some form of subsidy from\u00a0the government for religious study. Politically, Haredim have been focused primarily on\u00a0the economic well-being and religious concerns of their community. Due to very high\u00a0fertility rates \u2013 28% of Haredim ages 40 and older report having had seven or more\u00a0children \u2013 they are growing as a percentage of Israeli Jews and changing the dynamics of\u00a0Israeli Jewish society in the process. dietary laws, observe the Sabbath and fast\u00a0on Yom Kippur, to name just a few traditional practices. One possible explanation: Jewish\u00a0observance is more ingrained in daily life in Israel than it is in the U.S. For example, many\u00a0Israeli businesses close early on Friday afternoon before the start of the Sabbath. Kosher\u00a0food is more widely available than it is in the U.S., and major Jewish holidays are Israeli\u00a0national holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And although Israeli Jews are \u2013 on the whole \u2013 more religious than American Jews, that\u2019s\u00a0not the whole story. About four-in-ten\u00a0American Jews have traveled to Israel at least once (many have done so more than once),\u00a0and a similar share of Israeli Jews have visited the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jewish Americans feel a strong emotional connection with the Jewish state: A solid\u00a0majority say they are either \u201cvery\u201d or \u201csomewhat\u201d attached to Israel and that caring about Israel is either \u201cessential\u201d or \u201cimportant\u201d to what being Jewish means to\u00a0them. The connection is felt both ways: Most Israeli Jews say Jewish Americans have a\u00a0good impact on the way things are going in Israel. In addition, most Israeli Jews say that a\u00a0thriving diaspora is vital to the long-term survival of the Jewish people and that Jews in\u00a0the two countries share a \u201ccommon destiny.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jews are a people who often look back and feel pride in a long, resilient history.
