More than 13 million Hispanics reside in California, 30% of all Hispanics in the United States. There are over 5 million eligible Hispanic voters in California, 28% of all U.S. Hispanic eligible voters.[1. In this fact sheet, eligible voters are defined as U.S. citizens ages 18 and older. Eligible voters are not the same as registered voters. To cast a vote, in all states except North Dakota, an eligible voter must first register to vote.] This fact sheet provides key demographic information on Latino eligible voters.[2. The terms \u201cHispanic\u201d and \u201cLatino\u201d are used interchangeably. References to \u201cwhites,\u201d \u201cblacks,\u201d and \u201cAsians\u201d are to the non-Hispanic components of those populations.] It also contains data on other major groups of eligible voters in California, with comparative data for the U.S. All data are from the Census Bureau\u2019s 2006 American Community Survey.[3. The specific data set used to derive estimates contained in this fact sheet are from the University of Minnesota\u2019s Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) for the 2006 American Community Survey (1% sample). Also, estimates in this fact sheet will differ from estimates that may be published by the Census Bureau because of differences between the data used by the Census Bureau and the data it has released for public use. By contrast, only 23% of all California eligible voters, 31% of Latino eligible voters nationwide, and 22% of all U.S. eligible voters are in that age range.<\/p><\/li>\n<li>30% of Hispanic eligible voters in California are naturalized U.S. citizens compared with 19% of all California eligible voters. Nationwide, 93% of all eligible voters are citizens by birth, as are 74% of all Hispanic voters compared with 70% of California Hispanic eligible voters.<\/li>\n<li>28% of Latino eligible voters in California have not completed high school, similar to the share of all Latino eligible voters nationwide. Only 13% of all California eligible voters and 14% of all eligible voters nationwide have not completed high school.<\/li>\n<li>61% of Hispanic eligible voters in California live in owner-occupied homes compared with 64% of all California eligible voters.
