Luis Gutierrez, a Puerto Rican congressman from Chicago, and Sen. Bob Menendez, a Cuban-American senator from New Jersey? And isn’t it a Cuban-American U.S. Senator, Marco Rubio, who is trying to save the Republican Party from themselves on this issue?

The reality is that there is a connection among the 50 million-plus Hispanics. When one group is attacked, we know it’s an attack on us all, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. so eloquently said. We should want, and we should work, to be connected. Because in our unity lies the power to make the policy changes necessary to advance our community and our country forward.

Janet Murguía is president and CEO of the National Council of La Raza

Views in this conversation series are those of each author alone, and not the views of the Pew Hispanic Center, which is nonpartisan and non-advocacy.

<!– Tell Us Your Story Join the conversation about ethnic identity on the Pew Hispanic Center Facebook page.–> Pew Hispanic’s recent report on Hispanic identity underscores the complexity with which Latinos view themselves.Unfortunately, too many have interpreted this complexity as a negative thing. For example, the study shows that nine in ten Latinos believe it […]

[156,131,28,144
[458
[523

post-63290","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-hispanic-latino-identity","category-integration_identity","category-race-ethnicity","category-racial-ethnic-identity","formats-report","research-teams-race-and-ethnicity
https://alpha.pewresearch.org/pewresearch-org/race-and-ethnicity/2012/05/31/janet-murguia-diverse-identities-but-much-common-ground/
https://alpha.pewresearch.org/pewresearch-org/race-and-ethnicity/2012/05/30/a-conversation-about-identity-tell-us-your-story/
II.
