Some refer to the Republican frontrunner\u2019s intellect and conservatism.Others see him as \u201cold school\u201d or even as an \u201cidiot.\u201d Most frequently, they offer a quick negative assessment of Gingrich\u2019s White House bid: \u201cno\u201d or \u201cno way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, the most common word offered about Mitt Romney is \u201cMormon.\u201d This also was the most frequently used word to describe Romney the last time this question was asked in October. Other top answers include a rejection of his candidacy \u2013 variations on \u201cno\u201d or \u201cno way\u201d \u2013 and references to criticism of the former Massachusetts governor as a \u201cflip-flopper.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest survey by the Pew Research Center for the People &amp; the Press and The Washington Post, conducted Dec. 8-11 among 1,008 <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2011\/12\/14\/top-one-word-reactions-to-gop-frontrunners\/12-14-11-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20036851\"><img data-dominant-color=\"efeff0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #efeff0;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"190\" height=\"413\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2011\/12\/12-14-11-2.png?resize=190,413 190w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-68437 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2011\/12\/12-14-11-2.png\" alt=\"\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">adults, finds that more people offer negative than positive one-word assessments of both candidates. About four-in-ten (43%) offer no impression of Romney, while 33% offer no impression of Gingrich.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, roughly\u00a0equal numbers offer negative assessments of Romney (20%) and Gingrich (19%),\u00a0but more offer positive assessments of Gingrich than of Romney (23% and 15%, respectively). More than a third of this group offers no word about Romney (37%); 27% offer no opinion about Gingrich.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A separate Pew Research Center survey released this week shows Gingrich with a substantial lead over Romney among Republican and GOP-leaning registered voters. (See \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2011\/12\/13\/gingrich-leads-but-likely-gop-primary-voters-have-not-ruled-out-romney\/\">Gingrich Leads, But Likely GOP Primary Voters Have Not Ruled Out Romney<\/a>\u201d released Dec. 13.)<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common responses from Republicans and GOP-leaners about Gingrich refer to his intelligence <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2011\/12\/14\/top-one-word-reactions-to-gop-frontrunners\/12-14-11-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20036852\"><img data-dominant-color=\"edeeef\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #edeeef;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"296\" height=\"298\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2011\/12\/12-14-11-3.png?resize=296,298 296w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-68440 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2011\/12\/12-14-11-3.png\" alt=\"\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and knowledge, as well as his conservatism and his experience.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top responses about Romney are more mixed.
