For the most part, moderate to liberal on social issues, with positive views toward immigrants.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong> Young Outsiders<\/strong>: Tend to be distrustful of government programs and fiscally conservative, but very liberal on social issues and not very religious.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong> Hard-Pressed Skeptics<\/strong>: Generally distrustful of government, except for social safety net spending. On average, low-income, anti-immigrant compared with other groups.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong> Next Generation Left<\/strong>: Generally positive feelings about government, but less so for social programs. Tend to be business-oriented and individualistic.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong> Faith and Family Left<\/strong>: By and large, highly religious, socially conservative, but strongly support social safety net and government action more broadly.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong> Solid Liberals<\/strong>: Overall, highly supportive of social programs, immigrants and government generally; very skeptical of business and markets. Consistently liberal on social issues, from homosexuality to environmental protection.\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>America\u2019s Political Spectrum<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>America\u2019s political center is fractured into 4 groups that are as different from each other as from the left and right<\/li>\n<li>Groups in America\u2019s political middle are less partisan, less predictable, and less engaged in politics<\/li>\n<li>There are three strongly partisan groups in the U.S. today &#8211; one left and two right &#8211; who make up 36% of the public<\/li>\n<li>10% of the public are political bystanders: a young, diverse group on the sidelines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Parties\u2019 Coalitions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cSolid Liberals\u201d (17% of RVs) anchor the Democrats&#8217; coalition, yet Dems must reach other groups<\/li>\n<li>Main anchors of Republican base are &#8220;Steadfast Conservatives&#8221; and &#8220;Business Conservatives&#8221;&#8211;27% of registered voters<\/li>\n<li>Both parties face formidable challenges in reaching beyond their bases to appeal to the middle of the electorate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Groups in the Middle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cYoung Outsiders\u201d lean Republican, but diverge from GOP orthodoxy on social and other issues<\/li>\n<li>Economically battered \u201cHard-Pressed Skeptics\u201d supported Obama in 2012, but more divided today<\/li>\n<li>\u201cNext Generation Left\u201d &#8212; young, affluent, liberal but skeptical about cost of social programs<\/li>\n<li>Racially diverse \u201cFaith and Family Left\u201d lean heavily Democratic, but some uneasy with social change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rifts on the Right<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>73% of \u201cSteadfast Conservatives\u201d see immigrants as a burden; just 21% of \u201cBusiness Conservatives\u201d agree<\/li>\n<li>Gap between &#8220;Business Conservatives&#8221; and &#8220;Steadfast Conservatives&#8221; on whether Wall St. helps or hurts economy<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSteadfast Conservatives\u201d deeply skeptical of US global involvement; \u201cBusiness Conservatives\u201d favor an active US role<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rifts on the Left<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Just 37% of \u201cFaith and Family Left\u201d support same-sex marriage, unlike &#8220;Solid Liberals&#8221; (89%)<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Solid Liberals&#8221; more supportive of gov&#8217;t spending for poor than &#8220;Next Generation Left&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>91% of \u201cFaith and Family Left\u201d say belief in God is necessary to be moral compared with 11% of \u201cSolid Liberals\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Views of the Nation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>76% of \u201cSteadfast Conservatives\u201d say the U.S.\u2019s best years are behind us compared with 49% of overall public<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSolid Liberals\u201d (70%) and the \u201cNext Generation Left\u201d (65%) say the best is yet to come for the U.S.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Steadfast Conservatives&#8221; say reliance on principles key to U.S. success; &#8220;Solid Liberals&#8221; say it&#8217;s ability to change<\/li>\n<li>Majorities of all typology groups, especially conservative\u00a0groups, express low levels of trust in government<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our latest Political Typology survey sorts American voters into cohesive groups based on their attitudes and values and provides a field guide for the constantly changing political landscape.
