For this analysis, we surveyed 5,140 adults from Jan. 16-21, 2024. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. Beyond that, however, there are deep differences \u2013 over why the migrants are coming to the U.S., proposals for addressing the situation, and even whether it should be described as a \u201ccrisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"factors-behind-the-migrant-influx\">Factors behind the migrant influx<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Economic factors \u2013 <strong>either<\/strong> <strong>poor conditions in migrants\u2019 home countries<\/strong> <strong>or<\/strong> <strong>better economic opportunities in the United States <\/strong>\u2013 are widely viewed as major reasons for the migrant influx.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About seven-in-ten Americans (71%), including majorities in both parties, cite better economic opportunities in the U.S. as a major reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are wider partisan differences over other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About two-thirds of Americans (65%) say <strong>violence in migrants\u2019 home countries<\/strong> is a major reason for why a large number of immigrants have come to the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents are 30 percentage points more likely than Republicans and Republican leaners to cite this as a major reason (79% vs. 49%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, 76% of Republicans say <strong>the belief that U.S. immigration policies will make it easy to stay in the country once they arrive<\/strong> is a major factor. About half as many Democrats (39%) say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>For more on Americans\u2019 views of these and other reasons, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/02\/15\/what-americans-say-is-causing-a-migration-surge-at-the-u-s-mexico-border\">visit Chapter 2.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-serious-is-the-situation-at-the-border\">How serious is the situation at the border?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sizable majority of Americans (78%) say the large number of migrants seeking to enter this country at the U.S.-Mexico border is either a crisis (45%) or a major problem (32%), according to the Pew Research Center survey, conducted Jan. 16-21, 2024, among 5,140 adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/02\/15\/migrant-encounters-at-the-us-mexico-border-hit-a-record-high-at-the-end-of-2023\/\">Migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border hit a record high at the end of 2023<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-57675\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/02\/15\/how-americans-view-the-situation-at-the-u-s-mexico-border-its-causes-and-consequences\/pp_2024-2-15_us-mexico-border_0-2-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e7e1d1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e7e1d1;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/02\/PP_2024.2.15_US-Mexico-border_0-2.png?resize=480,681 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/02\/PP_2024.2.15_US-Mexico-border_0-2.png?resize=620,880 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"440\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/02\/PP_2024.2.15_US-Mexico-border_0-2.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Border situation viewed as a \u2018crisis\u2019 by most Republicans; Democrats are more likely to call it a \u2018problem\u2019\" class=\"wp-image-57675 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Republicans are much more likely than Democrats to <strong>describe the situation as a<\/strong> <strong>\u201ccrisis\u201d:<\/strong> 70% of Republicans say this, compared with just 22% of Democrats.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Democrats mostly <strong>view the situation as a major problem<\/strong> (44%) or minor problem (26%) for the U.S. Very few Democrats (7%) say it is not a problem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/02\/15\/in-their-own-words-americans-concerns-feelings-about-u-s-mexico-border-situation\/\">In an open-ended question<\/a>, respondents voice their concerns about the migrant influx. They point to numerous issues, including worries about how the migrants are cared for and general problems with the immigration system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet two concerns come up most frequently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>22% point to the <strong>economic burdens <\/strong>associated with the migrant influx, including the strains migrants place on social services and other government resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>22% also cite <strong>security concerns. <\/strong>Many of these responses focus on crime (10%), terrorism (10%) and drugs (3%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked specifically about the impact of the migrant influx on crime in the United States, a majority of Americans (57%) say <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>large number of migrants seeking to enter the country leads to more crime. <\/strong>Fewer (39%) say this does not have much of an impact on crime in this country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans (85%) overwhelmingly say the migrant surge leads to increased crime in the U.S. A far smaller share of Democrats (31%) say the same; 63% of Democrats instead say it does not have much of an impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"government-widely-criticized-for-its-handling-of-migrant-influx\">Government widely criticized for its handling of migrant influx<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the past several years, the federal government has gotten low ratings for its handling of the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border. <em>(Note: The wording of this question has been modified modestly to reflect circumstances at the time).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-57679\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/02\/15\/how-americans-view-the-situation-at-the-u-s-mexico-border-its-causes-and-consequences\/pp_2024-2-15_us-mexico-border_0-3-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e4e2e0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e4e2e0;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/02\/PP_2024.2.15_US-Mexico-border_0-3.png?resize=480,541 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/02\/PP_2024.2.15_US-Mexico-border_0-3.png?resize=782,881 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/02\/PP_2024.2.15_US-Mexico-border_0-3.png?resize=840,946 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"473\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/02\/PP_2024.2.15_US-Mexico-border_0-3.png?w=420\" alt=\"Chart shows Only about a quarter of Democrats and even fewer Republicans say the government has done a good job dealing with large number of migrants at the border\" class=\"wp-image-57679 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>However,<\/strong> <strong>the current ratings are extraordinarily low.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just 18% say the U.S. government is doing a good job dealing with the large number of migrants at the border, while 80% say it is doing a bad job, including 45% who say it is doing a <em>very bad<\/em> job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Republicans\u2019 views are overwhelmingly negative (89% say it\u2019s doing a bad job), as they have been since Joe Biden became president.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>73% of Democrats also give the government negative ratings, the highest share recorded during Biden\u2019s presidency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>For more on Americans\u2019 evaluations of the situation, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/02\/15\/how-americans-view-the-u-s-mexico-border-situation-and-the-governments-handling-of-the-issue\/\">visit Chapter 1<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"which-policies-could-improve-the-border-situation\">Which policies could improve the border situation?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no single policy proposal, among the nine included on the survey, that majorities of both Republicans and Democrats say would improve the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border. There are areas of <em>relative<\/em> agreement, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 60% majority of Americans say that <strong>increasing the number of immigration judges and staff in order to make decisions on asylum more quickly<\/strong> would make the situation better. In 2019, 82% of Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2019\/01\/16\/most-border-wall-opponents-supporters-say-shutdown-concessions-are-unacceptable\/\">favored expanding the border wall<\/a>, compared with just 6% of Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, 72% of Republicans say <strong>substantially expanding the wall along the U.S. border with Mexico<\/strong> would make the situation better.
