Due to small sample sizes, we do not report the views of Latter-day Saint Democrats in this analysis.] For example:

They’re half as likely as Republicans overall to say abortion should be legal in all or most cases.[19. In a newer survey from 2026, 36% of all Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said abortion should be legal in all or most cases – down from 2024. The share of Latter-day Saints in the 2023-24 RLS who said abortion should be legal is still significantly smaller than the 2026 share among all Republicans.]

About four-in-ten say homosexuality should be accepted in society, compared with half of all Republicans.

But Latter-day Saints overall appear to be growing less conservative on some of these issues. For example, 46% of all Latter-day Saints say in our 2023-24 RLS that homosexuality should be accepted by society, up from 24% in 2007.

And Latter-day Saint Republicans are more open than their national counterparts to racial and religious diversity. For instance, Latter-day Saint Republicans are more likely than Republicans overall to say that the U.S. population being made of people from many different races and ethnicities strengthens the country (75% vs. 60%). There is a similar response pattern on a question about religious diversity in the United States. (Latter-day Saints are themselves a minority in America, making up roughly 2% of the population.)

Latter-day Saint Republicans also are more likely than Republicans overall to say that a growing population of immigrants is a change for the better (31% vs. 18%). Still, nearly half of Latter-day Saint Republicans say that a growing immigrant population is a change for the worse (46%).

Three-quarters of Latter-day Saint Republicans say racial and ethnic diversity strengthens the country, compared with six-in-ten Republicans overall.

[658,581
[161,187,172,163

866,652
[458
2388

515
517

2625
post-401788","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-beliefs-practices","category-latter-day-saint-mormon","category-religion-politics-1","category-religion-social-values","bylines-jonathan-evans","bylines-rebecca-leppert","formats-report","regions-countries-united-states","research-teams-religion","collection-religious-landscape-study
https://alpha.pewresearch.org/pewresearch-org/religion/2026/09/22/latter-day-saints-largely-identify-as-republican-but-stand-out-from-their-partisan-peers-on-diversity-issues/
A1":
https://alpha.pewresearch.org/pewresearch-org/wp-content/uploads/sites/20/2026/09/PR_26.09.22_lds_featured.jpg
https://alpha.pewresearch.org/pewresearch-org/wp-content/uploads/sites/20/2026/09/PR_26.09.22_lds_featured.jpg?w=564&h=317&crop=1
The Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple in American Fork, Utah.
