In March 2002, just six months after the al-Qaida attacks, 25% of U.S. adults said the Islamic religion is more likely than other religions to encourage violence. In 11 subsequent polls, that figure has never been lower than 38%, and in the past decade it has hovered between 45% and 52%. Early this year, about half of U.S. adults surveyed (51%) said Islam encourages violence more than other religions do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Views on Islam have also become more politically polarized. In this year\u2019s poll, Republicans and independents who lean toward the GOP were far more likely than Democrats and Democratic leaners to say Islam encourages violence (76% vs. 29%). In the immediate aftermath of 9\/11, the partisan gap was much smaller (32% vs. 23%), perhaps reflecting a <a href=\"https:\/\/georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov\/news\/releases\/2001\/09\/20010917-11.html\">messaging campaign<\/a> by then-President George W. In late 2001, more than half (52%) of Muslims surveyed said their community had experienced anti-Muslim discrimination since the attacks, and 68% said media portrayals of Muslims and Islam were unfair. At the same time, 75% said Americans had been respectful and tolerant of Muslims. The poll was conducted by Zogby International on behalf of Project MAPS and The Pew Charitable Trusts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To a certain degree, the same pattern exists today. As of May 2026, most Muslims say there is \u201ca lot\u201d of discrimination against Muslims in the U.S. and that media portrayals of Muslims are often unfair. Nevertheless, the number of U.S. mosques has steadily risen from roughly 1,200 in 2000 to nearly 2,800 in 2020, according to data collected by the Faith Communities Today project, a multi-faith coalition affiliated with the Hartford Institute for Religion Research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Muslims have a growing presence in some parts of the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/08\/18\/gop-rhetoric-on-muslims-is-shifting-from-terror-threat-to-civilizational-threat\/\">political appeals to anti-Muslim sentiment are prominent<\/a> in some circles. In March of this year, Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, co-founder of the Sharia-Free America Caucus, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/chiproytx\/status\/2038428297013391512\">posted \u201cNo more Muslims\u2026\u201d<\/a> on X. In August, Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepNancyMace\/status\/2085825873479893276\">posted<\/a>, \u201cEvery single Muslim holding public office in America is a trojan horse, and a threat to both national security and our republic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Muslim candidates have won nominations in both parties. Dr. Mehmet Oz\u2019s 2022 victory in the Republican primary in Pennsylvania made him the first Muslim nominated by a <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/Politics\/dr-oz-make-history-muslim-senator-faith-big\/story?id=90541966\">major party for a Senate seat<\/a>, despite his eventual loss in the general election. Voters in Michigan\u2019s Democratic primary recently <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abdul-el-sayed-anti-muslim-backlash-mosques-655b2bdeee93207fdffcc248f5928c80\">selected Abdul El-Sayed<\/a> as their nominee for U.S. Senate in 2026. There are now <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/01\/02\/faith-on-the-hill-2025\/\">four Muslim members of Congress<\/a>, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/aisha-wahab-eric-swalwell-election-melissa-hernandez-17e1183d99f385000ea95e73d7670de6\">fifth about to join<\/a>, compared with zero in 2001. This included three in-depth surveys of U.S. Muslims conducted by Pew Research Center <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2007\/05\/22\/muslim-americans-middle-class-and-mostly-mainstream\/\">in 2007<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2011\/08\/30\/muslim-americans-no-signs-of-growth-in-alienation-or-support-for-extremism\/\">2011<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2017\/07\/26\/findings-from-pew-research-centers-2017-survey-of-us-muslims\/\">and 2017<\/a>. We also used an earlier study conducted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cippusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/pmreport.pdf\">in 2001<\/a> by Project MAPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our 2026 data on Muslim Americans came from the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel, supplemented with <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2016\/10\/25\/oversampling-is-used-to-study-small-groups-not-bias-poll-results\/\">oversamples<\/a> from three other nationally representative panels: SSRS\u2019s Opinion Panel, Ipsos\u2019 KnowledgePanel and NORC at the University of Chicago\u2019s AmeriSpeak Panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To estimate the size of the U.S. Muslim population in 2026, we used a variant of the methods that Pew Research Center used for estimating <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2017\/07\/26\/demographic-portrait-of-muslim-americans\/\">this population in 2017, 2011 and 2007<\/a>, combining information from the Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/02\/26\/religious-landscape-study-methodology\/\">2023-24 Religious Landscape Study<\/a> with basic demographic information from the Census Bureau\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/programs-surveys\/cps.html\">Current Population Survey<\/a> (CPS) and data from previous Center surveys of the U.S. Muslim population in <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2017\/07\/26\/appendix-b-survey-methodology-2\/\">2017<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2011\/08\/30\/survey-methodology-9\/\">2011<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data on anti-Muslim hate crimes comes from the FBI\u2019s Uniform Crime Reporting Program from 1999 to 2025.
