{"id":31371,"date":"2013-06-11T07:25:36","date_gmt":"2013-06-11T12:25:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2013\/06\/11\/australians-happy-but-not-with-their-government\/"},"modified":"2024-04-14T01:11:22","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T06:11:22","slug":"australians-happy-but-not-with-their-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2013\/06\/11\/australians-happy-but-not-with-their-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Australians Happy \u2013 But Not with Their Government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Bruce Stokes,\u00a0Director of Global Economic Attitudes,\u00a0Pew Research Center<\/em><i>\n<\/i><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Special to <a title=\"Australians Happy - But Not with Their Government\" href=\"http:\/\/globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com\/2013\/06\/11\/australians-happy-but-not-with-their-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>CNN<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the September general election rapidly approaching, domestic polls show the government of Prime Minister Julia Gillard trailing the opposition by a growing margin, despite the fact that Australians are among the most satisfied publics in the world, according to a new Pew Research Center <a title=\"Economies of Emerging Markets Better Rated During Difficult Times\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2013\/05\/23\/economies-of-emerging-markets-better-rated-during-difficult-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">survey<\/a>\u00a0of economic sentiment in 39 countries.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com.au\/national\/abbott-stretches-his-lead-over-gillard\/story-fncynjr2-1226656579446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poll<\/a> in <em>The Australian<\/em> newspaper earlier this month showed the opposition coalition with a 16-point lead over Gillard\u2019s Labor Party, with regional polls suggesting heavy losses for the ruling party.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet, after a generation without a recession, Australians are happier with the state of their economy and their personal finances than most people in advanced, emerging or developing economies. They have relatively high hopes for Australia\u2019s and their own economic futures.
