We have studied Americans\u2019 views of politics and major policy issues, including views of the president, for decades.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/about\/\">Pew Research Center.<\/a> &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"how-did-we-do-this\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did we do this?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We surveyed 5,103 U.S. adults from April 20 to 26, 2026. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel. The survey represents the views of the full U.S. adult population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/05\/PP_2026.5.1_Trump-approval_questionnaire.pdf\">survey questions<\/a> used for this analysis, the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/05\/PP_2026.5.1_Trump-approval_topline.pdf\">detailed responses<\/a> and the <a class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans and Republican leaning independents overwhelmingly (76%) say Trump is doing an excellent or good job pushing for his policies, regardless of whether Democratic policies when they disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, Democrats\u2019 ratings of their party on this measure have improved since April 2025:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Today, 36% of Democrats say Democratic officials are doing an excellent or good job of pushing hard against Trump when they disagree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is up 10 percentage points from last year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump and Democratic officials get lower ratings from their coalition when it comes to finding common ground with the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four-in-ten Republicans say Trump does an excellent or good job finding common ground with Democratic elected officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An even smaller share of Democrats (24%) say their officials do as good of a job finding common ground with Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But both coalitions say finding common ground is less important than pushing hard for policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Among Democrats:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>81% say it is extremely or very important for their elected officials to push hard against Trump\u2019s policies when they disagree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only about half as many (42%) say it is important for their officials to find common ground with Trump.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And similarly, among Republicans<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>61% say it is important for Trump to push hard for his policies regardless of whether Democratic elected officials agree.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Far fewer (46%) say it is important for Trump to find common ground with Democratic elected
