The survey represents the views of the full U.S. adult population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/05\/PP_2026.5.1_Trump-approval_questionnaire.pdf\">survey questions<\/a> used for this analysis, the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/05\/PP_2026.5.1_Trump-approval_topline.pdf\">detailed responses<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2026\/05\/01\/trump-approval-may-2026-methodology\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans\u2019 assessments of President Donald Trump have declined steadily over the last several months. His job approval rating now stands at 34% \u2013 the lowest mark of his second term. But that share is down since last summer, too, from 68%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new national survey by Pew Research Center \u2013 conducted April 20-26 among 5,103 U.S. adults \u2013 also finds that public confidence in Trump on several key issues facing the nation has declined:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>41% now say they are very or somewhat confident Trump can make good decisions on immigration policy, down from 46% in August and 53% shortly after his 2024 reelection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>38% now express confidence in Trump to use military force wisely, down from 46% last summer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2026\/05\/01\/americans-remain-critical-of-trump-administrations-approach-to-iran\/\">Americans remain critical of Trump administration\u2019s approach to Iran<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confidence in Trump to make good decisions on economic policy has shifted less over this period \u2013 42% express confidence today, while 44% did in August. GOP confidence in Trump on foreign policy in general has declined 7 points over this time period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By comparison, Democrats and Democratic leaners continue to near-universally disapprove of Trump, little changed from the earliest days of his term. Trump\u2019s approval rating among his Hispanic voters has declined 27 points since early 2025, compared with a 14-point drop among his White voters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Trump\u2019s approval rating has also declined substantially among those who did not vote in 2024:<\/strong> 26% of these U.S. adults now approve of his job performance, down from 30% in January and 45% in early 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nearly all 2024 Kamala Harris voters (98%) disapprove of Trump\u2019s job performance,<\/strong> little changed over the course of his term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;other-key-findings&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" id=\"other-key-findings\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other key findings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"ethics-and-honesty-in-government\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ethics and honesty in government<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A majority of Americans (56%) say the overall level of ethics and honesty in the federal government has fallen over the course of Trump\u2019s term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=301223\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e9e7e3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e9e7e3;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/04\/PP_5.1.2026_Trump-approval_00-04.png?resize=480,666 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/04\/PP_5.1.2026_Trump-approval_00-04.png?resize=620,860 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"430\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/04\/PP_5.1.2026_Trump-approval_00-04.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Majority now say level of ethics in government has fallen under Trump\" class=\"wp-image-301223 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Far fewer (19%) say it has risen, while about a quarter (24%) say it has stayed about the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first two weeks of Trump\u2019s second term, 47% expected the level of ethics and honesty to fall, while 31% thought it would rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"views-among-republicans\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Views among Republicans<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly after Trump took office in January 2025, 59% of Republicans said they expected the level of ethics would rise with Trump as president, while 11% said it would fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, 37% of Republicans and Republican leaners say the level of ethics in government has risen with Trump as president, while 23% say it has fallen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"views-among-democrats\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Views among Democrats<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats and Democratic leaners overwhelmingly say the level of ethics and honesty has fallen over Trump\u2019s term (88%). Just 3% say it\u2019s acceptable while he is president, while another 11% see it as acceptable after his presidency.
