It focuses on artificial intelligence \u2013 from how teens use chatbots to how they think about AI\u2019s future impact. The study also dives deeply into how teens use AI chatbots for schoolwork and explores teens\u2019 confidence in and awareness of AI. And it unpacks their parents\u2019 views, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size\" id=\"why-did-we-do-this\">Why did we do this?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Center conducts research to inform the public, journalists and decision-makers.&nbsp;Tracking the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topic\/internet-technology\/emerging-technology\/artificial-intelligence\/\">rise of AI in society<\/a> and understanding the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topic\/internet-technology\/user-demographics\/age-generations-tech\/teens-tech\/\">experiences of teens and their parents today<\/a> have been key priorities for us over the years. This study brings those two things together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teens are often at the forefront of new technology, and AI is no different: Our <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2025\/12\/09\/teens-social-media-and-ai-chatbots-2025\/\">December report<\/a> showed that a majority of teens use AI chatbots. It\u2019s important to understand how AI\u2019s rise plays out in teens\u2019 daily lives, at home and in school \u2013 as well as how their parents feel about these issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/about\/\">Learn more about Pew Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size\" id=\"how-did-we-do-this\"><strong>How did we do this<\/strong>?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We surveyed 1,458 U.S. teens and their parents online from Sept. 25 to Oct. 9, 2025. Our data collection partner Ipsos recruited the teens via their parents, who were part of its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-us\/solutions\/public-affairs\/knowledgepanel\">KnowledgePanel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Findings about <strong>teens\u2019<\/strong> views and experiences represent the views of all U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who live with their parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Findings about <strong>parents\u2019<\/strong> views and experiences represent the views of all U.S. parents of teens ages 13 to 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For both teens and parents, the overall margin of error is plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This research was reviewed and approved by an external institutional review board (IRB), Advarra. An IRB is an independent committee of experts that helps to protect the rights of research participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/02\/PI_2026.02.24_Teens-and-AI_TOPLINE.pdf\">questions used for this report<\/a>, along with responses, and the<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2026\/02\/24\/teens-and-ai-methodology\/\"> survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, parents have been raising teenagers in an <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2024\/03\/11\/how-teens-and-parents-approach-screen-time\/\">era of smartphones and social media<\/a>. Now, artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots introduce a new layer to modern parenting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2025\/12\/09\/teens-social-media-and-ai-chatbots-2025\/\">majority of teens now using these tools<\/a>, Pew Research Center asked 1,458 U.S. parents of 13- to 17-year-olds the following questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>As far as you know, does your teen ever use AI chatbots?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do you ever talk with your teen about using them?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Would you be OK with your teen using chatbots for certain things?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These questions are part of a larger study on teens and AI. In fact, more than nine-in-ten say they\u2019ve heard of these tools, according to the fall 2025 survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked about their own teen, 51% of parents say their teen uses chatbots, while 18% say they do not. Still, about three-in-ten parents are not sure if their teen uses these tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There is also a gap between parents\u2019 perceptions and what teens are actually doing.<\/strong> When we asked teens themselves, 64% of U.S. teens reported using chatbots. But what uses do parents find appropriate? About eight-in-ten parents say they would be OK with their teen using chatbots for this purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smaller shares \u2013 though still roughly two-thirds \u2013 are comfortable with their teen using chatbots for <strong>fun or entertainment,<\/strong> to <strong>create or edit<\/strong> images or videos, or to <strong>summarize<\/strong> articles, books or videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly six-in-ten parents would be OK with their teen using these tools to <strong>help with schoolwork.<\/strong> And half say the same about <strong>getting news.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But parents are less accepting of their child using chatbots for more personal uses. Fewer than a third are OK with their teen <strong>having casual conversations<\/strong> with a chatbot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even fewer (18%) say they\u2019d be comfortable with their teen <strong>getting emotional support or advice<\/strong> from a chatbot. In fact, this is the only use we asked about that a majority of parents are not OK with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, some don\u2019t know where they stand. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Searching for information:<\/strong> 83% of parents in households earning $75,000 or more a year say they would be comfortable with their teen using chatbots to do this. This drops to about seven-in-ten among parents with annual incomes less than $75,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For fun, entertainment:<\/strong> Parents in upper-income households are also more open to their teen using chatbots for fun or entertainment than those with lower or middle incomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the pattern is reversed for<strong> getting emotional support or advice. <\/strong>Three-in-ten parents in lower-income households say they\u2019d be comfortable with their teen doing this. As always, their responses are incorporated into the general population figures throughout the report.] <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Black parents are also more comfortable with their teen using chatbots for emotional support or advice<\/strong> or for summarizing materials than Hispanic or White parents.
