With these reports, we have looked at opinions about both sides of the relationship between news producers and news consumers in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn more about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research Center<\/a>&nbsp;and our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topic\/news-habits-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research on news habits and media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How we did this<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We surveyed 3,560 U.S. adults from Dec. 8 to 14, 2025. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/the-american-trends-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Trends Panel<\/a>. The survey represents the views of the full U.S. adult population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also conducted nine online focus group discussions led by PSB Insights with 45 U.S. adults, held from June 10 to 18, 2025. These discussions do not represent the entire U.S. population. This report shares findings and quotes from the focus groups to help illustrate and add detail to the survey results. This may connect to the fact that <strong>many<\/strong> <strong>Americans<\/strong> <strong>think that news organizations should make most of their money from advertising,<\/strong> not subscriptions or government funding, and that most think news organizations are doing at least somewhat well financially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In focus group discussions held as part of the study, some participants expressed a view that paying for news shouldn\u2019t be a responsibility. \u201cI don\u2019t think that information should be a privilege,\u201d one woman in her 20s said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A woman in her 50s said, \u201cI don\u2019t pay to go to church, to get a spiritual message, you know? And if you\u2019re true, and your mission is to relay facts that are fundamentally important for people\u2019s well-being, do I need to pay you for that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others observed that the money to pay for newsgathering has to come from somewhere. \u201cI think somebody has to pay those journalists,\u201d a man in his 60s said. \u201cSomebody has to \u2013 it\u2019s costly to travel around. It\u2019s costly to report the news. One participant, a man in his 20s, said, \u201cI feel like it\u2019s a luxury to pay for news. \u2026 I think there\u2019s still news accessible via free outlets, like just Googling something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn some ways, I hate to pay for another subscription to another channel or subscribing to something,\u201d a woman in her 50s explained. \u201cI don\u2019t want to give anybody that money. So I\u2019m kind of like, if I can find a free news source, then I prefer that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some said they support the concept of paying for news, including supporting independent journalists or creators through platforms like Substack, but felt subscription fatigue from being asked to pay for access to multiple news sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a man in his 40s said, \u201cYou want to read different people\u2019s articles, they want you to pay. And you like all these people, but \u2026 I can\u2019t do $5 for 20 people. That\u2019s a lot. But advertising revenue for the newspaper industry <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/newspapers\/#economics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dropped dramatically in the last two decades<\/a> and in recent years fell below circulation revenue for the first time in nearly 70 years of recorded data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Republicans (51%) and Democrats (41%) are most likely to select advertising or sponsorships as the main way news organizations should make money. Democrats are modestly more likely than Republicans to say the main source of income should be government funding (14% vs. 7%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Younger Americans also are more likely than their elders to say government funding is the main way news organizations should make money (15% of adults under 50 vs. 5% of those 50 and older). Still, selling advertising is the most common response even among young Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focus group conversations \u2013 particularly the following exchange among three participants in their 20s after they were asked about who should be responsible for ensuring people have access to news \u2013 revealed some people\u2019s mixed feelings about the concept of government-funded journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60)\"><em>Participant 1:<\/em> I\u2019m thinking. My first thought was the government, but then I\u2019m like, I don\u2019t know if state-sanctioned journalism is a good idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60)\"><em>Participant 2:<\/em> Dangerous tightrope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60)\"><em>Participant 1:<\/em> Yeah, because I\u2019m like, well, it\u2019s a public service, but then there\u2019s a high risk there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60)\"><em>Moderator:<\/em> [Participant], how do you feel about that? But <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/cable-news\/#economics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cable news revenues<\/a> have also begun to show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/msnbc-fox-cnn-cable-news-future-1236127677\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signs of decline<\/a>, particularly for CNN and MSNBC (now known as MS NOW).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upper-income Americans are more likely than those with lower incomes to say news organizations are doing not too well or not at all well financially (40% say this).
