Studying Americans\u2019 religious identities is a key part of the Center\u2019s long-standing research agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about Pew Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How did we do this? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This analysis includes findings from a survey of 8,937 U.S. adults who are part of the Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/the-american-trends-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Trends Panel<\/a>. The survey was conducted May 5-11, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/12\/PR_2025.12.15_us-religious-switching_questionnaire.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">questions<\/a> from that survey that we used for this analysis, as well as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/12\/PR_2025.12.15_us-religious-switching_topline.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">topline<\/a>&nbsp;and the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/12\/15\/methodology-us-religious-switching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey&nbsp;methodolog<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/D\">y<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This analysis also includes findings from the Center\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/collections\/religious-landscape-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023-24 Religious Landscape Study<\/a> (RLS), a survey of 36,908 U.S. adults. It was conducted from July 17, 2023, to March 4, 2024, and has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 0.8 percentage points. The RLS was made possible by The Pew Charitable Trusts, which received support from the Lilly Endowment Inc., Templeton Religion Trust, The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations and the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the full list of <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/PR_2025.02.26_religious-landscape-study_questionnaire-web-phone.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">questions<\/a>&nbsp;from the RLS, as well as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/PR_2025.02.26_religious-landscape-study_topline.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">topline<\/a>&nbsp;and details about the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/02\/26\/religious-landscape-study-methodology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey&nbsp;methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent decades, religiously unaffiliated Americans \u2013 atheists, agnostics and people who identify religiously as \u201cnothing in particular\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/02\/26\/religious-landscape-study-religious-identity\/#trends-among-religiously-unaffiliated-americans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have risen<\/a> as a share of the U.S. adult population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This chapter explores the reasons why unaffiliated Americans (often called religious \u201cnones\u201d) don\u2019t identify with a religion, and why many of them say they left the religion in which they were raised. Additionally, it looks at why some people who were raised without a religion have joined one as adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, 29% of U.S. adults are religiously unaffiliated, according to the 2023-24 Religious Landscape Study (RLS). Overall, 3% of U.S. adults have made this switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans who were raised as \u201cnones\u201d and have since joined a religion cite a variety of reasons for why they identify with their current religion. The survey finds that people who are religious \u201cnones\u201d today are less likely than adults who identify with a religion to say they:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attended religious services at least once or twice a month as children (50% vs. 78%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Had a mostly positive experience with religion while growing up (23% vs. 69%)[7. numoffset=&#8221;7&#8243; Respondents were provided the following response options to this question: \u201cMostly positive\u201d experiences, \u201cMostly negative,\u201d \u201cSome of both,\u201d and \u201cNeither positive nor negative.\u201d They could also say \u201cI did not have much experience with religion when I was growing up.\u201d]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grew up regularly doing four or five religious activities that we asked about (18% vs. 40%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grew up in an extremely or very religious household (17% vs. 39%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Had parents who spoke extremely or very often about religion (14 % vs.
