It is part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/12\/15\/why-do-some-americans-leave-their-religion-while-others-stay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">broader report<\/a> that focuses on patterns in religious switching in the United States, including the reasons people give for staying in or leaving their childhood religion. The report also looks at how certain social and demographic factors may relate to religious switching. Studying Americans\u2019 religious identities is a key part of the Center\u2019s long-standing research agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about Pew Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How did we do this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This analysis includes findings from a survey of 8,937 U.S. adults who are part of the Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/the-american-trends-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Trends Panel<\/a>. The survey was conducted May 5-11, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/12\/PR_2025.12.15_us-religious-switching_questionnaire.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">questions<\/a> from that survey that we used for this analysis, as well as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/12\/PR_2025.12.15_us-religious-switching_topline.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">topline<\/a>&nbsp;and the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/12\/15\/methodology-us-religious-switching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey&nbsp;methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This analysis also includes findings from the Center\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/collections\/religious-landscape-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023-24 Religious Landscape Study<\/a> (RLS), a survey of 36,908 U.S. adults. It was conducted from July 17, 2023, to March 4, 2024, and has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 0.8 percentage points. The RLS was made possible by The Pew Charitable Trusts, which received support from the Lilly Endowment Inc., Templeton Religion Trust, The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations and the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the full list of <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/PR_2025.02.26_religious-landscape-study_questionnaire-web-phone.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">questions<\/a>&nbsp;from the RLS, as well as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/PR_2025.02.26_religious-landscape-study_topline.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">topline<\/a>&nbsp;and details about the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/02\/26\/religious-landscape-study-methodology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey&nbsp;methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protestantism, which includes many <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/02\/26\/religious-landscape-study-religious-identity\/#a-detailed-look-at-the-size-of-protestant-denominations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">denominations of different sizes<\/a> as well as nondenominational Protestant churches, is the largest subgroup of Christians in the United States. This analysis looks at the reasons Protestant adults give for being Protestants, the reasons <em>former <\/em>Protestants give for having left, and the reasons some other Americans give for having become Protestants. (This chapter does <em>not<\/em> examine religious switching within Protestantism, such as from Methodist to Presbyterian.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, four-in-ten U.S. adults are Protestants, according to Pew Research Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/02\/26\/decline-of-christianity-in-the-us-has-slowed-may-have-leveled-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023-24 Religious Landscape Study<\/a> (RLS). The survey also asked religiously unaffiliated Americans why they <em>don\u2019t<\/em> identify with any religion. Around half (51%) of adults who switched to Protestantism from their childhood religion say an extremely or very important reason they left their childhood religion is that their spiritual needs were not being met. A similar share (49%) says feeling called to a new faith was an extremely or very important reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-420-wide\"><a religion\u2019s teachings (35%), scandals involving clergy or religious leaders (29%), and unhappiness with their former religion\u2019s teachings about social and political issues (26%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;why-religious-nones-who-grew-up-protestant-are-now-unaffiliated&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-religious-nones-who-grew-up-protestant-are-now-unaffiliated\">Why religious \u2018nones\u2019 who grew up Protestant are now unaffiliated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An estimated 10% of U.S. adults are <em>former<\/em> Protestants who are now religiously unaffiliated, meaning they identify religiously as atheist, agnostic or \u201cnothing in particular.\u201d (The unaffiliated are often called religious \u201cnones.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked to evaluate several possible reasons why they are not affiliated with a religion, 81% of these former Protestants who are now \u201cnones\u201d say an extremely or very important reason is that they believe they can be moral without having a religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other common reasons include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Questioning a lot of religion\u2019s teachings (cited by 67% of former Protestants who are now \u201cnones\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not needing religion to be spiritual (57%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not liking religious organizations (49%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distrusting religious leaders (49%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey did not include enough adults who were raised Protestant and now identify with a different religion to analyze them separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;experiences-with-being-raised-protestant&quot;}\" Protestant<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The May 2025 survey also included several questions about how much religion people had in their lives growing up, and whether their childhood religious experiences were positive or negative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upward of eight-in-ten Americans who were raised Protestant and are still Protestant (83%) say they grew up attending religious services at least once or twice a month, while fewer former Protestants who are now religiously unaffiliated (66%) say this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And most Americans who were raised Protestant and are still Protestant say they had a mostly positive experience with religion when they were growing up (72%).
