For this analysis, we surveyed 3,445 adults from Sept. 22 to 28, 2025. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education, presidential vote (among voters) and other factors. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">Read more about the ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.3_israel-hamas-war_questionnaire.pdf\">questions used for this report<\/a>, the <a href=\"#_2025_PEW_RESEARCH\">to<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.3_israel-hamas-war_topline.pdf\">pline<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2025\/10\/03\/israel-hamas-conflict-methodology\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly two years into Israel\u2019s military operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip following Hamas\u2019 Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel, Americans\u2019 skepticism of Israel\u2019s operation and its government is higher than at earlier points in the conflict:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>39% now say Israel is going too far<\/strong> in its military operation against Hamas. A third of adults say they aren\u2019t sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large shares of Americans continue to express uncertainty across several questions about the ongoing war in the Middle East and the U.S. government\u2019s response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new national survey from Pew Research Center, conducted Sept. 22-28 among 3,445 adults, finds that 42% of U.S. adults disapprove of the Trump administration\u2019s response to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, while 30% approve. Roughly a quarter (27%) say they are not sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>(The survey was conducted before Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-netanyahu-israel-hamas-war-gaza-708a08671b8842d7a7a5e250ec51351c\">announced earlier this week that Israel had agreed to a U.S.-led peace plan<\/a>, which Hamas says it\u2019s considering.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The share of Americans who say President Donald Trump is favoring the Israelis too much has increased 5 percentage points since March<\/strong> (from 31% to 36%). The share saying Trump is striking the right balance has declined 6 points (from 29% to 23%). But the shares saying Trump is favoring the Israelis too much have risen in both partisan coalitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>U.S. military assistance to Israel<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A third of adults (33%) say the United States is providing too much military assistance to Israel. Far fewer (8%) say the U.S. is not providing Israel enough military assistance. About a quarter (23%) say it is providing about the right amount, and 35% aren\u2019t sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>U.S. humanitarian aid to Palestinian citizens<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By comparison, 35% say the U.S. is not providing enough humanitarian aid to Palestinian citizens in Gaza, while 9% say it is providing too much humanitarian aid. About four-in-ten say they are extremely or very concerned about these possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These concerns are widespread among both Republicans and Democrats. However, there are partisan differences in the <em>level<\/em> of some concerns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say they are extremely or very concerned about Israeli military strikes in Gaza killing Palestinian civilians, starvation in Gaza, and the possibility of Palestinians being forced to leave Gaza.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Republicans are more likely than Democrats to say they are extremely or very concerned about the possibility of Hamas attacking Israel in the future.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is no partisan gap in concerns about the remaining hostages not being returned to Israel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Details on these questions can be found in <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2025\/10\/03\/concerns-about-the-conflict-between-israel-and-hamas\/\">Chapter 3<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;views-of-the-israelis-palestinians-and-their-leadership&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"views-of-the-israelis-palestinians-and-their-leadership\">Views of the Israelis, Palestinians and their leadership<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans continue to hold much more positive views of the Israeli and Palestinian peoples than of their political leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, 56% have a favorable view of the Israeli people, while 52% view the Palestinian people favorably. By contrast, 59% view the Israeli government <em>unfavorably<\/em>, while 68% say the same about the Palestinian Authority. Americans overwhelmingly view Hamas unfavorably (84%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=276170\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eae9e7\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eae9e7;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.03_israel-hamas-war_0-04.png?resize=480,394 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.03_israel-hamas-war_0-04.png?resize=782,642 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.03_israel-hamas-war_0-04.png?resize=840,690 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"345\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.03_israel-hamas-war_0-04.png?w=420\" alt=\"Chart shows Americans view the Israeli and Palestinian people more favorably than the Israeli government, Palestinian Authority or Hamas\" class=\"wp-image-276170 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But Americans\u2019 opinions of both the Israeli government and the Israeli people are less positive than they were in February 2024.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, 35% have a favorable view of the Israeli government, down from 41% in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while 56% now view the Israeli people positively, that is down from 64% a year and a half ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Views of the Palestinian people, the Palestinian Authority and Hamas have not changed over the past year and a half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There continue to be wide partisan gaps in some of these views<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>70% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents view the Palestinian people favorably, compared with 37% of Republicans and GOP leaners.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>55% of Republicans view the Israeli government positively, compared with just 18% of Democrats.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Democrats are equally likely to have a favorable as unfavorable view of the Israeli people (48% each). By comparison, 67% of Republicans have a favorable view.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>82% of Republicans and 56% of Democrats view the Palestinian Authority unfavorably.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At least eight-in-ten in
