How we did this<\/summary>\n

This Pew Research Center analysis focuses on public opinion of the United States and President Donald Trump in 24 countries across North America, Europe, the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific region, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. The report also explores how people view Trump\u2019s personal characteristics and whether they have confidence in him to handle various international issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pew Research Center has tracked public opinion of the U.S. and U.S. presidents around the world for over two decades. We also measure public opinion about other countries and their leaders, as well as major international organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We select countries to survey based on a variety of factors, including feasibility, security, political climate and budget, as well as the size of a country\u2019s population and economy. We try to include nations from regions around the globe, and we often survey many of the same countries consistently over time so we can track trends in public opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This analysis draws on nationally representative surveys of 28,333 adults across 24 countries (not including the U.S.) conducted Jan. 8-April 26, 2025. All surveys were conducted over the phone with adults in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Surveys were conducted face-to-face in Argentina, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa and Turkey. In Australia, we used a mixed-mode probability-based online panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We conducted simultaneous telephone and face-to-face surveys in Hungary and Poland in 2024. Data in our 2024 reports was from the face-to-face survey. The 2024 data in this report comes from the telephone survey for direct comparison to our 2025 telephone data. For this reason, 2024 data for Hungary and Poland may not match earlier reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. President Donald Trump receives mostly negative ratings in a new Pew Research Center survey of 24 nations. More than half in 19 of these countries say they lack confidence in Trump\u2019s leadership of world affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Majorities in most countries also express little or no confidence in Trump\u2019s ability to handle specific issues, including immigration, the Russia-Ukraine war, U.S.-China relations, global economic problems, conflicts between Israel and its neighbors, and climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked about Trump\u2019s personal characteristics, most describe him as arrogant and dangerous, while relatively few see him as honest. Still, majorities in 18 countries consider Trump a strong leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In most nations, views about Trump differ sharply along ideological and partisan lines. People who place themselves on the right and those who have favorable views of right-wing populist parties in Europe tend to view Trump more favorably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall ratings of the United States have declined in 15 nations since last spring, including drops of 20 percentage points or more in Mexico, Sweden, Poland and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In six countries, there has been no significant change in views of the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People in Israel, Nigeria and Turkey have become more likely to give the U.S. a favorable rating since last year. Israel and Nigeria are two of the five nations (along with Hungary, India and Kenya) where half of adults or more express confidence in Trump\u2019s handling of world affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this report, we surveyed 28,333 people in 24 countries, not including the U.S., from Jan. 8 to April 26, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fieldwork in every country except Indonesia began after Trump\u2019s second-term inauguration on Jan. 20. Most interviews were conducted after the meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Feb. 28 and before Trump announced tariffs on countries around the world on April 2. Refer to Appendix A<\/a> for more information on our survey fieldwork period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
