Christian population change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christians are the world\u2019s largest religious group, and they are a majority in every region except the Asia-Pacific and Middle East-North Africa regions. But they are shrinking as a share of the global population, as large numbers of Christians around the world \u201cswitch\u201d out of religion to become religiously unaffiliated. Sub-Saharan Africa has surpassed Europe as the region with the largest number of Christians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;global-change&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"global-change\">Global change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>number <\/em>of Christians worldwide grew by 6%, from 2.1 billion in 2010 to 2.3 billion in 2020, while non-Christians grew by 15%. In Europe, Christians declined to 505 million (down 9%). In North America, they shrank to 238 million (down 11%). In every other region, the number of Christians grew. Percentages dropped most in the regions that had large Christian populations to begin with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In North America, Christians now make up 63% of the population (down 14 percentage points), while in Europe they make up 67% (down 8 points). As of 2020, sub-Saharan Africa was home to 31% of all the Christians in the world (up 6 points since 2010), while Europe held 22% of the global Christian population (down 4 points).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many Christians also live in the Latin America-Caribbean region (24% of all Christians, down 1 point from 2010 to 2020) and North America (10%, down 2 points).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;countries-with-the-highest-christian-counts&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"countries-with-the-highest-christian-counts\">Countries with the highest Christian counts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States has more Christian residents than any other country. Based on religious self-identification measured in surveys, we estimate there were roughly 25 million Chinese Christians in 2020. In all but one of these countries \u2013 Mozambique \u2013 the Christian population share <em>declined<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How is \u2018substantial change\u2019 defined?<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This section highlights countries that experienced substantial change in the size of their religious populations between 2010 and 2020. We focus on cases where a religious group\u2019s share of a country\u2019s population grew or shrank by at least 5 percentage points. We set that threshold because wide variations in data sources make it difficult to test the statistical significance of differences in population estimates in 2010 and 2020. Refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/06\/09\/global-religious-change-methodology\/\">Methodology<\/a> for details.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Countries where the share of Christians fell are scattered throughout every region of the world, but many are in Europe and other Western or English-speaking places where Christian majorities have been shrinking for decades. This change is largely driven by high rates of Christian disaffiliation \u2013 i.e., by <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2025\/03\/26\/religious-switching-into-and-out-of-christianity\/#where-has-christianity-experienced-the-largest-net-gains-and-losses-from-religious-switching\">people becoming religiously unaffiliated<\/a> as adults after having been raised as Christians in childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The largest drop in the Christian share of a country\u2019s population occurred in <strong>Australia<\/strong> (down 20 points), where Christians made up a little less than half of the population in 2020.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Christians also declined steeply in <strong>Chile<\/strong> and <strong>Uruguay<\/strong> (down 18 points and 16 points, respectively).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Christians in the <strong>U.S.<\/strong> and <strong>Canada<\/strong> declined at similar rates (down 14 points in each place).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only country where Christians<em> increased<\/em> substantially was <strong>Mozambique<\/strong> (up 5 points), and they accounted for 61% of the country\u2019s population in 2020.
