For this analysis, we surveyed 11,945 U.S. adults from Aug. 7 to Aug. 27, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone who took part in the survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way, nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/methods\/u-s-survey-research\/american-trends-panel\/\">ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/SR_23.11.09_tipping-culture_topline.pdf\">questions used for this report<\/a>, along with responses, and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2023\/11\/09\/tipping-culture-methodology\/\">its methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A broad majority of Americans say they\u2019re being asked to tip service workers more frequently than in the past. Only about a third say it\u2019s extremely or very easy to know whether (34%) or how much (33%) to tip for different types of services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor is there consensus on whether tipping \u2013 which is built into the pay structures and business models of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/tipping-businesses-cant-stop-asking-cc1aca6c\">many service industries<\/a> \u2013 is more of a choice or an obligation for consumers. Around two-in-ten Americans (21%) say it\u2019s more of a choice, while 29% say it\u2019s more of an obligation. Among our key findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The public is more likely to oppose than favor suggested tip amounts.<\/strong> More Americans oppose (40%) than favor (24%) businesses suggesting tip amounts to their customers \u2013 for example, on the bill or on a checkout screen. Another 32% neither favor nor oppose the practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Americans broadly oppose automatic service charges.<\/strong> About seven-in-ten adults (72%) say they oppose businesses including automatic service charges or tips on customers\u2019 bills, regardless of group size \u2013 including half who <em>strongly<\/em> oppose the practice. Just 12% tip at fast casual restaurants with no servers.\" class=\"wp-image-31396 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e4e7e9; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Americans\u2019 tipping behaviors vary widely by situation. <\/strong>About nine-in-ten adults who eat at sit-down restaurants (92%) say they always or often leave a tip in this scenario. Among those using other services, smaller majorities tip when getting a haircut (78%), having food delivered (76%), buying a drink at a bar (70%), or using a taxi or rideshare service (61%). Relatively few Americans always or often tip when buying a coffee (25%) or eating at a fast casual restaurant (12%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A majority of Americans say they would tip 15% or less for an average meal at a sit-down restaurant.<\/strong> Nearly six-in-ten (57%) say this, including 2% who say they wouldn\u2019t leave <em>any<\/em> tip. Only a quarter of people say they\u2019d tip 20% or more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For most people, tipping is first and foremost about service.<\/strong> Around three-quarters of adults (77%) say the quality of the service they receive is a major factor in deciding whether and how much to tip. None of the other factors we asked about comes close.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey comes at a time when tipping \u2013 a practice that Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/vinepair.com\/articles\/american-tipping-culture\/\">broadly embrace<\/a> yet have long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/culture-shrink\/201511\/the-psychology-of-tipping\">felt conflicted about<\/a> \u2013 is undergoing significant structural and technological changes. These changes include the expansion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/01\/technology\/personaltech\/tipping-defaults-digital-payments.html\">digital payment platforms and devices that encourage tipping<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/15\/dining\/restaurant-service-charges.html\">spread of mandatory service charges<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this report, Pew Research Center surveyed 11,945 U.S. adults from Aug. 7 to Aug. 27, 2023, using the Center\u2019s nationally representative <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">American Trends Panel<\/a>.
