Social acceptance for gay, lesbian, bisexual, nonbinary and transgender people"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to how much social acceptance there is for people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, nonbinary or transgender in the U.S. today, LGBTQ adults see the most acceptance for those who are gay or lesbian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we defined LGBTQ groups for analysis<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout this report, references to gay, lesbian and bisexual adults exclude those who are transgender. Transgender adults are of any sexual orientation (28% of trans adults we surveyed identify as gay or lesbian, 53% are bisexual, and 8% are straight).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Queer adults are included in the total and in the gay&nbsp;or lesbian, bisexual, and trans totals if they indicated they also identify with these terms. And about half (52%) say the same for those who are bisexual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much smaller shares say there\u2019s a great deal or a fair amount of acceptance for people who are nonbinary (14%) or transgender (13%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly half (52%) say there\u2019s <em>not much or no acceptance at all<\/em> for transgender people. But those who are bisexual (56%) are more likely than those who are gay or lesbian (50%) or transgender (46%) to say there\u2019s a lot of acceptance for bisexual people<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LGBTQ adults who are nonbinary (57%) are more likely than LGBTQ men and women (43% each) to say there is <em>not much or no acceptance at all <\/em>for nonbinary people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LGBTQ Republicans are more likely than LGBTQ Democrats to say there\u2019s a great deal or a fair amount of acceptance for people who are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gay or lesbian (75% vs. 59%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bisexual (70% vs. 49%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nonbinary (20% vs. 12%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transgender (25% vs. 11%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;views-of-social-acceptance-10-years-ago-and-10-years-from-now&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"views-of-social-acceptance-10-years-ago-and-10-years-from-now\">Views of social acceptance 10 years ago and 10 years from now<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also asked LGBTQ adults their views of social acceptance today for people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, nonbinary or transgender compared with <em>10 years ago<\/em>, and how they expect things to be <em>10 years from now<\/em>. These shares range somewhat: 68% think there will be more acceptance for people who are gay or lesbian 10 years from now, while 59% say the same for nonbinary people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"views-by-age\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Views by age<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar shares of LGBTQ adults ages 18 to 49 and ages 50 and older say there\u2019s at least somewhat more acceptance for people who are gay or lesbian compared with 10 years ago (83% and 82%). But younger LGBTQ adults are more likely than older ones to say there\u2019s more acceptance today for people who are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bisexual (78% vs. 69%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transgender (68% vs. 57%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nonbinary (68% vs. 52%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;impact-of-obergefell-v-hodges-on-acceptance-of-same-sex-couples&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"impact-of-obergefell-v-hodges-on-acceptance-of-same-sex-couples\">Impact of Obergefell v. Hodges on acceptance of same-sex couples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, the Supreme Court ruled in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/crt\/legacy\/2015\/06\/26\/obergefellhodgesopinion.pdf\">Obergefell v. This includes 20% who say it has made people <em>a lot<\/em> more accepting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About a quarter (24%) say Obergefell made people neither more nor less accepting. And 9% say it made them a lot or somewhat less accepting of same-sex couples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"views-by-education\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Views by education<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LGBTQ adults with more education are more likely than those with less to say the ruling has made the country more accepting of same-sex couples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About three quarters (74%) of LGBTQ adults with at least a bachelor\u2019s degree say this. By comparison, two-thirds of those with some college and 57% of those with a high school diploma or less education say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"views-by-party\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Views by party<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among LGBTQ adults, Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say Obergefell has made the country more accepting of same-sex couples (70% vs. 55%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference is mostly driven by the shares saying the ruling has made the country <em>somewhat <\/em>more accepting of same-sex couples. Half of LGBTQ Democrats say this, compared with 39% among LGBTQ Republicans. For example, 73% of those with at least a bachelor\u2019s degree say more religious leaders expressing support for LGBTQ people would do a lot.
