Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. Far smaller shares say he is doing about the right amount (27%) or too little (5%) through executive orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: This survey was conducted after Trump\u2019s April 2 announcement of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tariffs-timeline-trade-war-trump-canada-mexico-china-a9d714eea677488ef9397547d838dbd0\"><em>sweeping new tariffs on nearly all U.S. trading partners<\/em><\/a><em>, which triggered several days of volatility in U.S. and global stock markets. The survey was in the field on April 9 when Trump paused tariffs on most countries but levied higher rates on China. But immigration actions, including deportations, also are cited by 11% of Americans as the thing they like least about the administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related:<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/race-and-ethnicity\/2025\/03\/26\/americans-views-of-deportations\/\"><em>Americans\u2019 Views of Deportations<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"approach-to-governing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Approach to governing<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About two-in-ten Americans (22%) describe an aspect of Trump\u2019s governing approach as what they like least about the administration. This includes mentions of \u201ccarelessness\u201d (3%), Cabinet and other staffing picks (2%), perceived targeting of law firms and universities (2%), and terms like \u201cauthoritarian\u201d or \u201cdictator\u201d (3%). Conversely, 11% of Americans cite his \u201ckeeping promises\u201d or \u201cgetting things done\u201d as what they like most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"tariffs-and-cuts-to-government\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tariffs and cuts to government<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tariffs and trade policy (15%) and government cuts (11%) are both mentioned by at least one-in-ten Americans as actions they like least. But these are also volunteered by sizable shares (6% and 9%, respectively) as aspects of Trump\u2019s presidency they like most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"views-of-cuts-to-the-federal-government\">Views of cuts to the federal government<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the administration continues to plan and implement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/03\/28\/us\/politics\/trump-doge-federal-job-cuts.html\">large-scale reductions across federal agencies<\/a>, 59% of Americans say it is being \u201ctoo careless\u201d in how it makes these cuts. And the public is more likely to see the cuts having negative, rather than positive, effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>51% say the cuts will make the government run worse, while 36% say they will make the government run better.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>48% expect the cuts will cost Americans money in the long run. Still, Trump\u2019s economic rating remains higher than Biden\u2019s was throughout his presidency. About half (48%) express confidence in Trump on immigration \u2013 his highest-rated issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Half of Americans say Trump\u2019s policies are weakening U.S. standing in the world compared with Biden\u2019s policies. <\/strong>About four-in-ten (38%) say Trump\u2019s policies are putting the U.S. in a stronger position internationally.
