A much smaller share of teens from households with incomes under $30,000 say the same (23%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some teens have other plans for after high school, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attending a two-year college (10%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enrolling in a technical or vocational school (9%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working full time (6%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Joining the military (3%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About one-in-five teens (18%) are unsure of their plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=202032\"><img data-dominant-color=\"edeeea\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #edeeea;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/ST_2025.3.13_teens-and-gender_4-02.png?resize=480,813 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/ST_2025.3.13_teens-and-gender_4-02.png?resize=620,1050 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"525\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/ST_2025.3.13_teens-and-gender_4-02.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Teen girls are more likely than boys to say they plan to attend a 4-year college\" class=\"wp-image-202032 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boys are more likely than girls to say they plan to enroll in a technical school, work full time or join the military after high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boys and girls are about equally likely to say they aren\u2019t sure of what they plan to do after high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also racial and ethnic differences on a couple of items. A 55% majority of White teens say they plan to attend a four-year college, while Hispanic teens are less likely to say this (43%). Among Black teens, 50% say they\u2019ll attend a four-year college (not significantly different from White or Hispanic teens). In turn, Black and Hispanic teens are more likely than White teens to say they plan to attend a two-year college (13% and 15% vs. 7%). The sample size for Asian teens is too small for separate analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;Future-goals&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Future-goals\">Future goals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also asked teens about some long-term goals \u2013 specifically, what they hope to achieve as adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=202033\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e0e9e7\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e0e9e7;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/ST_2025.3.13_teens-and-gender_4-03.png?resize=480,606 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/ST_2025.3.13_teens-and-gender_4-03.png?resize=782,987 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/ST_2025.3.13_teens-and-gender_4-03.png?resize=840,1060 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"530\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/ST_2025.3.13_teens-and-gender_4-03.png?w=420\" alt=\"Chart shows Looking toward adulthood, teens value job satisfaction\nand close friends\" class=\"wp-image-202033 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A large majority of teens (86%) say it\u2019s extremely or very important to them to have a job or career they enjoy when they\u2019re an adult. <\/strong>This includes 41% who say this is <em>extremely<\/em> important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Majorities also say having close friends (69%) and having a lot of money (58%) are highly important to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Smaller shares of teens place a high level of importance on family life milestones<\/strong> like getting married (36%) and having children (30%). We saw a similar pattern <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2023\/09\/14\/public-has-mixed-views-on-the-modern-american-family\/st_2023-09-14_modern-family_0-04-png\/\">among adults in 2023<\/a> when we asked what they thought was important in order for people to live a fulfilling life. Job satisfaction and having close friends ranked higher marriage and parenthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the potential goals we asked about, fame is least important among teens. Only 6% say becoming famous is important to them personally. By contrast, 80% say this is not too or not at all important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boys and girls answer similarly on all these items, except for one: Girls are 9 points more likely than boys to say having close friends is highly important to them (74% vs. 65%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also a couple notable racial and ethnic differences. Black and Hispanic teens are more likely than White teens to say having a lot of money is extremely or very important. Some 76% of Black teens and 66% of Hispanic teens say this, compared with 50% of White teens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In turn, White teens are more likely to say having close friends in adulthood is highly important: 75% say this, compared with 64% of Hispanic teens and 62% of Black teens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"views-by-political-party\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Views by political party<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=202034\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e3dddd\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e3dddd;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/ST_2025.3.13_teens-and-gender_4-04.png?resize=480,591 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/ST_2025.3.13_teens-and-gender_4-04.png?resize=620,764 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"382\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/ST_2025.3.13_teens-and-gender_4-04.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Republican teens are more likely than Democratic teens to say marriage and kids are highly important for their future\" class=\"wp-image-202034 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican and Republican-leaning teens are more likely than Democratic and Democratic leaners to say getting married (43% vs. 29%) and having children (38% vs. 24%) are highly important to them personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This also mirrors what we saw when we asked adults <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2023\/09\/14\/what-makes-for-a-fulfilling-life\/#:~:text=older%20age%20groups.-,Partisanship,-Roughly%20equal%20shares\">what makes a fulfilling life<\/a>. In 2023, about a third of Republican adults said having children or being married is extremely or very important in order for people to live a fulfilling life.
