Spiritual activities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How often do Americans engage in spiritual activities? The Religious Landscape Study (RLS) asked U.S. adults about six activities they might do for spiritual purposes. Here are some key findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>48% say they <strong>listen to music<\/strong> for spiritual reasons weekly or more often.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>40% find time to <strong>look inward or center themselves<\/strong> weekly or more often.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30% <strong>exercise<\/strong> for spiritual reasons weekly or more often.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>23% <strong>meditate<\/strong> weekly or more often.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>15% <strong>visit a nature spot<\/strong> such as a waterfall, mountaintop or river for spiritual reasons weekly or more often.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>7% <strong>practice yoga<\/strong> for spiritual reasons weekly or more often.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, 63% of Americans report that they engage in <em>at least one <\/em>of these six activities, for spiritual reasons, at least once a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-640-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=199212\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e4eef1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e4eef1;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/PR_2025.02.26_religious-landscape-study_013-01.png?resize=480,248 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/PR_2025.02.26_religious-landscape-study_013-01.png?resize=782,403 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/PR_2025.02.26_religious-landscape-study_013-01.png?resize=960,495 960w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/PR_2025.02.26_religious-landscape-study_013-01.png?resize=1200,619 1200w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/PR_2025.02.26_religious-landscape-study_013-01.png?resize=1280,660 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"330\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/PR_2025.02.26_religious-landscape-study_013-01.png?w=1024\" alt=\"Bar chart showing 63% of U.S. adults say that they do at least 1 thing weekly for spiritual reasons\" class=\"wp-image-199212 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans who identify with a religion are more likely than religiously unaffiliated adults (those who identify religiously as atheist, agnostic or \u201cnothing in particular\u201d) to say they participate on a weekly basis in at least one of these spiritual activities (71% vs. 45%).[60. numoffset=&#8221;60&#8243; In a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2023\/12\/07\/spirituality-among-americans\/\">different survey from 2023<\/a>, Pew Research Center asked questions on similar topics in slightly different ways. In that survey, respondents were first asked how often they engaged in the following: looking inward or centering yourself, exercise, meditation, spending time in nature and practicing yoga. Then, those who said they engaged in any of these activities at least a few times a month were asked to select from the following options which was the most important reason why they did these things: \u201cTo feel connected with something bigger than myself,\u201d \u201cTo get health benefits, including relaxation,\u201d \u201cTo have fun and enjoy the experience,\u201d \u201cTo feel connected with other people,\u201d \u201cTo feel connected with my true self,\u201d or for a different reason. Because of the differences in how these previous questions were asked, they are not directly comparable with the 2023-24 Religious Landscape Study (RLS) questions explored in this chapter.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey also finds that 3% of U.S. adults say they go on a spiritual retreat more than once a year. And 33% say they never listen to music for spiritual purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These rates vary widely across religious groups. Roughly seven-in-ten members of historically Black Protestant churches (72%) say they listen to music for spiritual reasons on a weekly basis, as do 65% each among evangelical Protestants and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (widely known as Mormons).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jewish Americans and religiously unaffiliated adults are much less likely to say they listen to music for spiritual reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;looking-inward-or-centering-yourself&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"looking-inward-or-centering-yourself\">Looking inward or centering yourself<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four-in-ten Americans say they find time to look inward or center themselves for spiritual reasons at least once a week. An earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2023\/12\/07\/spiritual-practices\/pr_2023-12-07_spirituality_3-09-png\/\">Pew Research Center survey from 2023<\/a> found that 15% of Americans practice yoga (for any reason) at least a few times a month, including 11% who do it mainly for their health, enjoyment or other reasons; 2% who do it mainly to feel connected with their \u201ctrue self,\u201d 1% who do it mainly to feel connected with something bigger than themselves, and 1% who do it mainly to feel connected with other people.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hindu Americans are especially likely to engage in yoga for spiritual reasons: 32% say they do this once a week or more often.
