Views of the government leaders, institutions and other countries are examined in the context of long-term trend data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report draws on nationally representative surveys of 1,049 Turkish adults conducted from Jan. 29 to March 11, 2024. Surveys were conducted face-to-face and weighted to be representative of the Turkish adult population with the following variables: gender, age, education, region, urbanicity and probability of selection of respondent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To compare educational groups across countries, we standardize education levels based on the UN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/uis.unesco.org\/en\/topic\/international-standard-classification-education-isced?wbdisable=true\">International Standard Classification of Education<\/a> (ISCED).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to 2024, combined totals were based on rounded topline figures. For all reports beginning in 2024, totals are based on unrounded topline figures, so combined totals might be different than in previous years. Less than a year later, Erdo\u011fan\u2019s Justice and Development party (AKP) suffered its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/erdogan-battles-key-rival-turkeys-local-elections-2024-03-31\/\">worst-ever electoral defeat<\/a> in local elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the time between these two elections, Pew Research Center surveyed 1,049 Turkish adults. The results show negative opinions of Erdo\u011fan and mixed views of the national government he leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, 55% of Turkish adults have an unfavorable opinion of Erdo\u011fan, while 43% have a favorable opinion. This marks a 32 percentage point decrease in favorability from 2017, including a 27-point drop in the share of Turks with a <em>very<\/em> favorable opinion of their president. The 2017 survey was conducted eight months after Erdo\u011fan and his government survived a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/7\/15\/turkeys-failed-coup-attempt-explainer\">coup attempt<\/a> by a faction of the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Support for Erdo\u011fan is a key factor in Turkish public opinion<\/strong> <strong>on domestic and international topics alike.<\/strong> Compared with those who have an unfavorable opinion of the president, Turkish adults who see Erdo\u011fan <em>favorably<\/em> are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More trusting in the national government to do the right thing for Turkey<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More confident that the May 2023 elections were conducted fairly and accurately<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More confident that the government will take the necessary measures to prepare for future natural disasters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More satisfied with the way democracy currently works in Turkey<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More supportive of a form of government that relies on a strong leader<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More likely to see groups and institutions such as the military, religious leaders and the courts as having a good influence on the country<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;More favorable toward China and Russia, and more confident in these countries\u2019 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Age is another key indicator of public opinion on several topics.<\/strong> For example, adults ages 50 and older are more positive toward Erdo\u011fan and the national government when compared with adults ages 18 to 34.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Frequency of prayer among the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/feature\/religious-composition-by-country-2010-2050\/\"><strong>98% of Turks<\/strong><\/a><strong> who are Muslim is also tied to views of multiple issues.<\/strong> Muslim adults who pray more frequently (one of the Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/08\/09\/where-is-the-most-religious-place-in-the-world\/\">measures of religiosity<\/a>) have more confidence that the 2023 election was conducted fairly and accurately, for instance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are some other key findings from the survey, which marks the first time since 2019 that Pew Research Center has polled in Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;confidence-in-the-government&quot;}\" government<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=189319\"><img class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, Turkish adults express<strong> limited confidence in their national government.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly half (51%) say they do not trust the government to do what is right for the country. A similar share (53%) is not confident that the May 2023 presidential election was conducted fairly and accurately. And about a year after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey \u2013 leaving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/turkiye-syria-earthquakes\">more than 50,000 dead<\/a> \u2013 61% of Turks are not confident that the government will take the necessary steps to prepare for future natural disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jump to<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2024\/10\/16\/how-people-in-turkey-view-their-government\/\"><em>Chapter 1<\/em><\/a><em> for more on how people in Turkey view their government.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;views-of-democracy&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"views-of-democracy\">Views of democracy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignright is-style-callout is-style-320-wide has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-turkey-a-democracy\">Is Turkey a democracy?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Turkey\/Constitutional-framework\">parliamentary democracy<\/a>, according to its constitution. In practice, the government is classified as a \u201chybrid regime\u201d by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eiu.com\/n\/campaigns\/democracy-index-2023\/\">Economist Intelligence Unit<\/a>, an \u201celectoral autocracy\u201d by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v-dem.net\/publications\/democracy-reports\/\">Varieties of Democracy<\/a> project, and \u201cnot free\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/report\/freedom-world\/2023\/marking-50-years\">Freedom House<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two-thirds of Turks are dissatisfied with the way democracy is currently working in their country. But democracy itself \u2013 in both representative and direct form \u2013 is still a popular idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Majorities of Turks say representative and direct democracy would be good ways to govern Turkey<\/strong> (80% and 79%, respectively). Fewer Turks \u2013 though still a majority \u2013 say there are strong conflicts between people with different ethnic identities. Turks also report low trust in other international political leaders \u2013 including former U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turks have somewhat more positive opinions of NATO and the European Union. Since our last survey of Turkey in 2019, the share of adults with a positive view of NATO has doubled<strong>, <\/strong>though overall opinions of the alliance are still mixed. The share of Turks with a favorable view of the EU is up 12 points since 2019.
