Voter engagement in the 2024 election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most supporters of both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris say they\u2019ve thought a lot about the candidates this year and say the outcome of the race really matters. As in other recent elections, t<a><\/a>he two coalitions are roughly equally engaged and interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And satisfaction with the field is much higher than it was a few months ago \u2013 as Harris\u2019 backers are now much more likely to say they are satisfied than President Joe Biden\u2019s supporters were in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nearly two-thirds of voters (64%) say they have given <em>a lot<\/em> of thought to the candidates<\/strong> who are running in the 2024 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=186747\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f0f0f0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f0f0f0;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/PP_2024.9.9_harris-trump_5-01.png?resize=480,497 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/PP_2024.9.9_harris-trump_5-01.png?resize=620,642 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"321\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/PP_2024.9.9_harris-trump_5-01.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Harris and Trump supporters are about equally engaged in the 2024 election\" class=\"wp-image-186747 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As was the case in 2020, supporters of the two candidates are about equally likely to say they have given a lot of thought to the candidates running for president. Today, 63% of Harris supporters and 66% of Trump supporters say this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About three-quarters of voters (76%) say it really matters who wins the election. <\/strong>This is on par with voters\u2019 views about the 2020 election in both August (76%) and October (78%) of that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar shares of Harris (76%) and Trump (77%) supporters say it really matters who wins the 2024 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the late summer and fall of both 2016 and 2020, supporters of the two major party candidates were also about equally likely to say the outcome really mattered. For example, 78% of Biden supporters and 76% of Trump supporters said in early August 2020 that it really mattered who won that presidential election. And in September 2016, roughly three-quarters of both Clinton and Trump backers said that year\u2019s election outcome really mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"satisfaction-with-the-candidates\">Satisfaction with the candidates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall voter satisfaction with the presidential candidates is substantially higher than it was two months ago, and this shift is mostly a result of Harris supporters being nearly three times more likely to say they are satisfied with the candidates than Biden supporters were in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=186748\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e9e7e7\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e9e7e7;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/PP_2024.9.9_harris-trump_5-02.png?resize=480,521 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/PP_2024.9.9_harris-trump_5-02.png?resize=782,849 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/PP_2024.9.9_harris-trump_5-02.png?resize=840,912 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"456\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/PP_2024.9.9_harris-trump_5-02.png?w=420\" alt=\"Chart shows Harris supporters are more likely than Trump backers to be satisfied with the presidential candidates \u2013 a shift from the dynamic when Biden was in the race\" class=\"wp-image-186748 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About half of registered voters (48%) now say they are very or fairly satisfied with the presidential candidates this year,<\/strong> while a similar share (51%) say they are <em>not<\/em> satisfied with the candidates. Satisfaction is now 17 percentage points higher than it was in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About half of Harris supporters (52%) say they are satisfied with the presidential candidates,<\/strong> while a smaller share of Trump supporters (45%) say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July \u2013 before Biden dropped out of the race \u2013 Trump supporters were much more likely than Biden supporters to say they were satisfied with the candidates (51% vs. 18%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harris supporters are now also more likely to say they are satisfied with the candidates than Biden supporters were at a similar point in 2020 (52% vs. 41%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, current Trump supporters (45%) are less likely than those who supported Trump in 2020 (53%) to say they are satisfied with the candidates running for president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;views-of-the-values-and-goals-of-the-other-candidate-s-supporters&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"views-of-the-values-and-goals-of-the-other-candidate-s-supporters\">Views of the values and goals of the other candidate\u2019s supporters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked to think about the \u201cordinary Americans\u201d who support the other candidate, overwhelming shares of both Trump and Harris supporters say that they not only have different views on politics and policies, but also that these disagreements extend to \u201ccore American values and goals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Three-quarters of Harris supporters \u2013 and about eight-in-ten Trump supporters (81%) \u2013 say they fundamentally disagree with the other group about the nation\u2019s core values.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=186749\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eae8e3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eae8e3;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/PP_2024.9.9_harris-trump_5-03.png?resize=480,450 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/PP_2024.9.9_harris-trump_5-03.png?resize=782,734 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/PP_2024.9.9_harris-trump_5-03.png?resize=840,788 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"394\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/PP_2024.9.9_harris-trump_5-03.png?w=420\" alt=\"Chart shows Most Harris and Trump backers say their differences extend to \u2018core American values and goals\u2019\" class=\"wp-image-186749 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, 24% of Harris supporters and 18% of Trump supporterssay that they \u201cshare a fundamental commitment to the same core American values and goals\u201d with those who back the other candidate, despite their different political and policy priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harris supporters are now somewhat more likely than <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2020\/10\/09\/amid-campaign-turmoil-biden-holds-wide-leads-on-coronavirus-unifying-the-country\/\">Biden supporters were in 2020<\/a> to see a shared&nbsp; fundamental commitment to the same core American values and goals as Trump supporters (24% now vs. 18% then).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, Trump supporters today (18%) are slightly <em>less<\/em> likely than Trump supporters four years ago (22%) to say their differences with the Democratic candidate\u2019s supporters are limited to political and policy priorities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most supporters of both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris say they\u2019ve thought a lot about the candidates this year and say the outcome of the race really matters.
