The UN also includes some people who live in a country temporarily \u2013 like some students and guest workers \u2013 but it does not include short-term visitors like tourists, nor does it typically include military forces deployed abroad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For brevity, this report refers to international migrants simply as <strong>migrants. <\/strong>Occasionally, we use the term <strong>immigrants<\/strong> to differentiate migrants living in a <em>destination country<\/em> from <strong>emigrants<\/strong> who have left an <em>origin country<\/em>. Every person who is living outside of his or her country of birth is all three \u2013 a migrant, an immigrant and an emigrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The analysis in this report focuses on existing <strong>stocks<\/strong> of international migrants \u2013 all people who now live outside their birth country, no matter when they left. We do not estimate migration <strong>flows<\/strong> \u2013 how many people move across borders in any single year.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 36 million international migrants are religiously unaffiliated \u2013 i.e. they say they have no religion or identify as atheist or agnostic. As of 2020, the religiously unaffiliated are underrepresented among migrants. They make up 13% of all people living outside their country of birth, but 23% of the general population.[16. numoffset=&#8221;16&#8243; This report presents interim estimates of the overall population in each religious group (including migrants and nonmigrants) using data from three Pew Research Center studies: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2015\/04\/02\/religious-projections-2010-2050\/\">The Future of World Religions<\/a>\u201d (projections of religious composition to the year 2020 published in 2015), \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2022\/09\/13\/modeling-the-future-of-religion-in-america\/\">Modeling the Future of Religion in America<\/a>\u201d (2022) and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2023\/08\/30\/measuring-religion-in-china\/\">Measuring Religion in China<\/a>\u201d (2023). In the future, the Center will produce new estimates of the overall size of religious groups in 2020, based on data sources that have become available in recent years. Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2024\/08\/19\/religious-composition-migrants-methodology\/\">Methodology<\/a> for details.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religiously unaffiliated have moved an average of 2,500 miles from their countries of origin \u2013 about the same distance as Christian, Jewish and Buddhist migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lion\u2019s share of migrants with no religious affiliation live in Europe (48%). Most of the rest are in North America (22%) and the Asia-Pacific region (22%), while only 5% live in Latin America and the Caribbean. Another 14% come from the Latin America-Caribbean region. China is the top country of origin for unaffiliated migrants to the U.S., accounting for about 1.7 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But unaffiliated migrants make up just 13% of all migrants to the U.S., a far smaller share than the 30% of all Americans who were unaffiliated as of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, migrants to the U.S. are less likely than the native-born U.S. population to be unaffiliated. As a result, migrants have slowed the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2022\/09\/13\/modeling-the-future-of-religion-in-america\/\">decline of religious affiliation<\/a> in the U.S.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germany, home to 8% of religiously unaffiliated migrants (3 million), is their second-most common destination. Poland and Russia are the most common origin countries for unaffiliated migrants living in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia, close behind Germany, is the third-most common destination for unaffiliated migrants. Most unaffiliated migrants to Russia have come from nearby ex-Soviet republics, such as Ukraine and Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;origins&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"origins\">Origins<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leading countries of origin for religiously unaffiliated migrants have large unaffiliated populations. The top two, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2023\/08\/30\/government-policy-toward-religion-in-the-peoples-republic-of-china-a-brief-history\/\">China<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2014\/02\/10\/russians-return-to-religion-but-not-to-church\/\">Russia<\/a>, have histories of state-sponsored atheism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=184487\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ededee\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ededee;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/08\/PR_2024.08.19_religious-composition-migrants_5-03.png?resize=480,547 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/08\/PR_2024.08.19_religious-composition-migrants_5-03.png?resize=782,892 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/08\/PR_2024.08.19_religious-composition-migrants_5-03.png?resize=840,958 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"479\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/08\/PR_2024.08.19_religious-composition-migrants_5-03.png?w=840\" alt=\"Bar chart showing the top 10 origins of unaffiliated migrants\" class=\"wp-image-184487 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China \u2013 which <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/02\/09\/key-facts-as-india-surpasses-china-as-the-worlds-most-populous-country\/\">in 2020 had more inhabitants than India<\/a> and also had the world\u2019s largest population of religiously unaffiliated people \u2013 is the most common country of origin for unaffiliated migrants. Nearly 20% of the world\u2019s stock of unaffiliated migrants were born in China (7.1 million).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nevertheless, migrants from China are <em>less<\/em> likely to be unaffiliated than are people living in China. About two-thirds of migrants from China are unaffiliated, compared with <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2023\/08\/30\/non-religion\/\">90% of its total population<\/a>. Some Chinese migrants did not have a formal religious identity until they adopted one in their destination country.[17. Some studies have found evidence of considerable switching among migrants from China, who join new religious communities as part of the process of integrating into their new home countries. Also refer to Yang, Fenggang. 1999. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/10.5325\/j.ctv14gp4d0\">Chinese Christians in America: Conversion, assimilation, and adhesive identities<\/a>.\u201d]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following distantly, Russia is the second-most common birth country for the world\u2019s unaffiliated migrants (2.4 million). Most unaffiliated migrants from Russia have moved to Ukraine (1.2 million) or Germany (310,000).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United Kingdom is the third-most common origin of unaffiliated migrants. The UK has a large native-born unaffiliated population. A majority of religiously unaffiliated migrants from the UK now live in other English-speaking countries, most commonly Australia, the U.S. and New Zealand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;country-pairs&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"country-pairs\">Country pairs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common route for unaffiliated migrants has been from China to Hong Kong (which the United Nations classifies as separate from China). Nearly 2 million unaffiliated migrants have moved from mainland China to Hong Kong. Both countries have large unaffiliated populations, though movement between them has, historically, also been common for other religious groups. The Russia-Ukraine war has changed migration patterns since 2022, leading to large migration flows out of Ukraine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2023\/08\/21\/the-ukrainians-forced-to-flee-to-russia#:~:text=The%20Russians%20called%20the%20process,it%20as%20a%20familiar%20environment.\">due partly to forced migration<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;change-since-1990&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"change-since-1990\">Change since 1990<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The global stock, or total number, of religiously unaffiliated people living outside their country of birth has grown from 21.8 million in 1990 to 36.4 million in 2020 (up 67%), which is lower than the estimated growth rate of international migrants overall (up 83%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S., Germany and Spain have experienced the largest influxes of unaffiliated migrants in recent decades. In the U.S., the stock of unaffiliated migrants has grown since 1990 from 3.4 million to 6.6 million (up 93%). In Germany, it has risen from 1.1 million to 3 million (a 162% rise), and in Spain it has jumped from 200,000 to 1.3 million (up 537%). Unaffiliated migrants to these countries most commonly come from China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decreases in the number of unaffiliated migrants occurred in Ukraine, from 2.1 million to 1.5 million (down 30%); in Latvia, from 190,000 to 60,000 (down 68%); and in Estonia, from 150,000 to 80,000 (down 50%). The drop in Ukraine was driven by a decline in migrants from Russia, as many Russian migrants who had moved there during the Soviet era moved again or gradually died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There also has been change among origin countries since 1990. China, Russia and the UK were already the most common countries of origin for unaffiliated migrants in 1990. Since then, the stock of unaffiliated migrants who were born in China has grown by 147%, while the stock of unaffiliated migrants from the UK has increased by 25%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, unaffiliated migrants from Russia have declined from 2.8 million to 2.4 million (down 14%), indicating return migration and deaths among those who left in prior decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Refer to our \u201c<a
