For this analysis, we surveyed 9,424 adults \u2013 including 7,729 registered voters \u2013 from July 1-7, 2024. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Surveys were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. And nearly seven-in-ten voters (68%) say they are not satisfied with their choices for president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the survey\u2019s major findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most voters describe Trump as \u201cmean-spirited.\u201d <\/strong>Trump trails Biden on honesty and, by a narrower margin, on empathy. And about twice as many voters describe Trump as mean-spirited (64%) as say that about Biden (31%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Majorities of voters describe <em>both<\/em> Biden and Trump as \u201cembarrassing,\u201d<\/strong> with identical shares (63% each) saying this about each candidate. A third or more of each candidate\u2019s supporters \u2013 37% of Biden supporters and 33% of Trump supporters \u2013 say their own candidate is embarrassing. Kennedy Jr. (15%) or another candidate (2%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the choices are narrowed to Biden and Trump, Trump would hold a slight edge: 50% favor Trump, while 47% support Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"age\">Age<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump leads Biden among voters ages 50 and older by 48% to 39%, with 11% favoring Kennedy. Trump has a more modest edge among voters 30 to 49: 42% support Trump, while 37% back Biden and 19% favor Kennedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden holds a wide advantage over Trump among voters under 30 (48% to 28%). About one-in-five voters (22%) in the youngest age group say they back Kennedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"race-and-ethnicity\">Race and ethnicity<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has an advantage among White voters (50% to 36% for Biden), while Biden holds a wide lead over Trump among Black voters (64% to 13%, with 21% supporting Kennedy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden and Trump are tied among Hispanic voters (36% each), while 24% support Kennedy. Biden has a wide lead over Trump among Asian voters (47% to 29%); 19% back Kennedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"partisanship-and-the-2020-vote\">Partisanship and the 2020 vote<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While both Biden and Trump draw support from large majorities of their own parties\u2019 voters, Trump is currently holding on to more of his 2020 voters than Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly nine-in-ten validated voters (88%) who backed Trump four years ago support him today. That compares with 79% of Biden\u2019s 2020 voters who currently support him. About one-in-seven (14%) of Biden\u2019s voters four years ago prefer Kennedy today; among Trump\u2019s 2020 voters, 8% say they\u2019re voting for Kennedy. In the new survey, voters render harsh judgments on the 2024 campaign:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>87% say that so far, the campaign does not make them feel proud of the country<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>76% say it is not focused on important policy debates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>68% describe the campaign as too negative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Majorities of voters across demographic groups express dissatisfaction with the presidential candidates. However, Trump supporters are far more satisfied with their choices than are either Biden or Kennedy supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About half of Trump supporters (51%) say they are very or fairly satisfied with the presidential candidates, while nearly as many (48%) say they are not too or not at all satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly eight-in-ten Biden supporters (81%) and an even larger majority of Kennedy supporters (90%) express dissatisfaction with the candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-growing-share-of-biden-supporters-would-replace-both-biden-and-trump-on-the-ballot\">A growing share of Biden supporters would replace both Biden and Trump on the ballot<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=180720\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e7e0d7\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e7e0d7;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/07\/PP_2024.7.11_election-2024_00-04.png?resize=480,692 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/07\/PP_2024.7.11_election-2024_00-04.png?resize=620,894 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"447\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/07\/PP_2024.7.11_election-2024_00-04.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Biden supporters have grown more likely to say they would replace both candidates if they could\" class=\"wp-image-180720 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since April, there has been a modest uptick in the share of voters who say that if given the chance, they would replace both Biden and Trump on the ballot. Currently, 53% favor replacing Biden and Trump with different candidates, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/04\/24\/in-tight-presidential-race-voters-are-broadly-critical-of-both-biden-and-trump\/\">up from 49% in April<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This shift has come entirely among Biden supporters. In fact, Trump supporters are <em>less likely<\/em> to favor replacing both candidates than they were in April.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, 71% of Biden supporters say that if they had the ability to decide the major party candidates for the 2024 election, they would replace <em>both<\/em> Biden and Trump. Roughly a quarter (23%) say they would keep Biden and replace Trump, while smaller shares would keep Trump and replace Biden (2%) or keep both candidates (3%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April, a smaller majority of Biden supporters (62%) favored replacing both Biden and Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among Trump supporters, by contrast, the share who would replace both candidates has declined, from 35% to 26%. For example, 39% say it really matters who wins, which is only about half the shares of Biden (79%) and Trump supporters (78%). And just 21% of Kennedy supporters say they are extremely motivated to vote; again, that is much lower than Biden or Trump supporters (63% each). His lead on immigration policy is 17 points: 52% of voters are very or somewhat confident in Trump, while 35% are confident in Biden. Biden leads by 8 points on working well with officials in the opposing party (40% to 32%) and by 4 points on making good decisions on abortion policy (48% to 44%).
