Israelis are broadly concerned about this: 65% say they are extremely or very concerned about increasing violence against Jews in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and 31% say the same about violence against Arabs. But Jewish and Arab Israelis differ over which group is the focus of their concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to Jewish settlements in the West Bank, 40% of the public say they help Israeli national security, while 35% say they hurt. (The remainder are unsure or decline to answer.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jewish Israelis are much more likely than Arab Israelis to view settlements as helping the country\u2019s security (49% vs. 8%). Indeed, two-thirds of Israeli Arabs say these settlements <em>hurt<\/em> Israeli security \u2013 a position also taken by 26% of Israeli Jews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Highly religious Jews in Israel tend to think that settlements contribute to the country\u2019s security, but secular Jews are more likely to say settlements hurt security. Among self-identified Haredim (\u201cultra-Orthodox\u201d Jews) and Datiim (\u201creligious\u201d Jews), 85% say that the continued building of settlements helps Israeli security, and 57% of Masortim (\u201ctraditional\u201d Jews) agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=178916\"><img data-dominant-color=\"bcc4c4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #bcc4c4;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/pg_2024.06.20_israel-june-24_3_02.png?resize=480,1245 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/pg_2024.06.20_israel-june-24_3_02.png?resize=620,1608 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"804\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/pg_2024.06.20_israel-june-24_3_02.png?w=310\" alt=\"A chart showing that Jewish Israelis increasingly see settlements as helping Israel\u2019s security, while a growing share of Arab Israelis say they make no difference to security\" class=\"wp-image-178916 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among Hilonim (\u201csecular\u201d Jews), just 21% say settlements help security, while a 47% plurality view settlements as harmful in this regard. Both Masortim and Hilonim are less likely to offer opinions on this question than Haredim or Datiim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israeli adults who place themselves on the ideological right are particularly likely to view settlements as helping Israel\u2019s security (68%), while those in the center (17%) and on the left (9%) are much less likely to share this viewpoint. Among those on the left, about seven-in-ten say the continued building of Jewish settlements in the West Bank hurts Israeli security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People who think that Israel and an independent Palestinian state <em>can<\/em> coexist peacefully are particularly likely to say that settlements <em>hurt<\/em> Israeli security (71%). Those who doubt that a way can be found for two states to coexist peacefully are much more inclined to see settlements as <em>helping<\/em> Israeli security (60%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the Israeli public overall, the view that settlements enhance security has increased 13 points since we first asked this question in 2013. Over that same 11-year period, the share of Israeli Jews who think building settlements helps Israel\u2019s security has steadily grown. And according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/2023-most-violent-year-for-west-bank-settler-attacks-watchdog-says\/\">Israeli human rights group<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/world-report\/2024\/country-chapters\/israel-and-palestine\">Human Rights Watch<\/a>, rates of violence and death in the West Bank are at a historic high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There also have been reports of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/29\/world\/middleeast\/israel-west-bank-shooting.html\">violence against Jewish settlers<\/a> in the West Bank, and more Israelis say they are extremely or very concerned about rising violence against Jews (65%) than against Palestinians (31%) in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Israeli Jews and Israeli Arabs differ sharply in their assessments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jewish Israelis are much more likely than Arab Israelis to express concern about rising violence <em>against Jews<\/em> in the West Bank and East Jerusalem (70% vs. 43%), though Arab Israelis are less likely to offer an opinion on this question.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arab Israelis are much more likely than Jewish Israelis to express concern about rising violence <em>against Palestinians<\/em> in these areas (73% vs. 19%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also ideological differences, with left-leaning Israelis 43 points more likely than right-leaning Israelis to voice concern about violence against Palestinians \u2013 and 20 points less likely to voice concerns about violence against Jews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Survey respondents who say Jewish settlements help Israeli security are significantly more concerned about rising violence against Jews when compared with those who think settlements hurt security (75% vs. 56%). But those who see settlements as helping security are <em>less <\/em>concerned about violence against Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem than those who say they hurt security (16% vs. 54%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israelis were also asked about their concerns about the war going on for a long time and expanding into other countries.
