How Facebook users view, experience the platform"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/03\/business\/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-20th-anniversary\/index.html\">two decades since Facebook first launched<\/a> in 2004. Since then, the company has grown into a social media giant with billions of users worldwide. Facebook remains one of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2024\/01\/31\/americans-social-media-use\/\">widely used social media sites<\/a> among adults in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s also had its controversies, including those related to politics. Facebook was widely criticized for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2017\/9\/27\/16376502\/mark-zuckerberg-facebook-donald-trump-fake-news\">how it handled misinformation<\/a> leading up to the 2016 U.S. presidential election. And some researchers believe its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/07\/27\/1190383104\/new-study-shows-just-how-facebooks-algorithm-shapes-conservative-and-liberal-bub\">algorithm amplifies partisan divides<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This chapter explores Facebook\u2019s connection with politics, including its prevalence on the site and users\u2019 views of its impact on the political environment.Here are some of the key findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Relationships \u2013 not politics \u2013 drive people to use Facebook. <\/strong>Most Facebook users (93%) say keeping up with friends and family is a reason why they use Facebook; just 26% say the same for politics or political issues.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Relatively few people post about politics or political issues on the site. <\/strong>Just 11% of Facebook users say they post at least some political content there. By comparison, people are much more likely to <em>see<\/em> political content on it: 52% of users say at least some of what they see is about this.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Facebook users have mixed views about its impact on democracy.<\/strong> The largest share (43%) says it has no impact on American democracy, but slightly more say it\u2019s mostly bad (31%) than mostly good (24%) for democracy.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Republicans on the site are more skeptical that free expression is the norm.<\/strong> While 71% of users think you can freely express your political views on Facebook, Republicans are more likely than Democrats to say this is <em>not<\/em> the case (35% vs. 20%). (Throughout this report, both groups include independents who lean toward each party.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;why-and-how-people-use-facebook&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-and-how-people-use-facebook\">Why and how people use Facebook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our survey explored the \u201cwhy\u201d and \u201cwhat\u201d behind how people use the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"reasons-for-using-facebook\">Reasons for using Facebook<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=170754\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d7dee6\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"840\" height=\"1000\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PI_2024.06.12_politics-across-platforms_3-01.png?resize=480,571 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PI_2024.06.12_politics-across-platforms_3-01.png?resize=782,931 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PI_2024.06.12_politics-across-platforms_3-01.png?resize=840,1000 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PI_2024.06.12_politics-across-platforms_3-01.png\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that About 9 in 10 Facebook users say keeping up with friends, family is a reason they use the platform; far fewer cite news or politics\" class=\"wp-image-170754 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d7dee6; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Facebook users are far more likely to cite relationships and entertainment as key reasons for using the site than news or politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fully 93% of Facebook users say <strong>keeping up with<\/strong> <strong>friends and family<\/strong> is a reason why they use the site, including 75% who say this is a major factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly three-quarters each say a reason they use Facebook is <strong>because it\u2019s entertaining <\/strong>or that they do so<strong> to connect with others <\/strong>who share their interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much smaller shares cite <strong>getting news<\/strong> (37%), <strong>product reviews or recommendations <\/strong>(37%), or <strong>keeping up with sports or pop culture<\/strong> (36%) as reasons for using Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even fewer \u2013 about one quarter \u2013 say <strong>keeping up with politics or political issues<\/strong> motivates them to use the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related<\/em><\/strong><em>: <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/06\/12\/facebook-users-experiences-with-news\/\">News as a reason people use Facebook<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By party<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reasons people cite for using Facebook vary little by political party. For example, nearly identical shares of Republican (27%) and Democratic (28%) users cite keeping up with politics and political issues as a reason they use the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"seeing-politics-on-facebook\">Seeing politics on Facebook<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several years ago, Facebook announced it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-reduce-political-posts-news-feeds-2021-8\">reduce the number of political posts users see in their feed<\/a>. For example, 54% of Republican users say that at least some of what they see on Facebook is about politics or political issues, nearly identical to the 53% of Democrats who say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"posting-about-politics-on-facebook\">Posting about politics on Facebook<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While seeing political posts is relatively common on Facebook, <em>posting<\/em> it is not. Identical shares of Republicans and Democrats who use Facebook (12% each) report that they share at least some political content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-do-people-post-about-politics-on-facebook\">Why do people post about politics on Facebook?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the 26% of Facebook users who post at least a little about politics, we wanted to understand what motivates them to do so. But Facebook users are more likely to say they see liberal-leaning posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, 22% of Facebook users say they see posts about politics or political issues on the site that are mostly liberal, while 12% say these are mostly conservative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About half say the political posts they see on Facebook don\u2019t lean liberal or conservative (24%) or that they\u2019re unsure (29%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By party<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans who use Facebook are more likely than their Democratic counterparts to say the political content they come across on the site is mostly liberal (29% vs. 16%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By comparison, Democratic users are more likely than Republican users to say what they see about politics leans mostly conservative (16% vs. 10%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, about three-in-ten users across parties are not sure how the content they see leans. Roughly eight-in-ten say people getting harassed on the site is a major (31%) or minor (50%) problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By party<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Democrats and Republicans who use Facebook think people getting harassed on the platform is a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Democrats are more likely to consider it to be a problem, including 35% who say it\u2019s a <em>major<\/em> one.
