How TikTok users view, experience the platform"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TikTok has <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2024\/01\/31\/americans-social-media-use\/\">grown in popularity<\/a> in recent years, attracting users with short-form videos ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/04\/18\/business\/media\/tiktok-ban-american-culture.html\">viral dances to product reviews to mental health stories<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/11\/15\/more-americans-are-getting-news-on-tiktok-bucking-the-trend-seen-on-most-other-social-media-sites\/\">grown as a place for news<\/a> \u2013 particularly among young people. And politicians and activists alike have used the platform to engage with issues they care about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To learn more about the political environment on TikTok, we asked U.S. users about their experiences and views. Here are the key findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Entertainment is the main draw.<\/strong> Almost all TikTok users (95%) say they go on the platform because it\u2019s entertaining. In contrast, only 36% say keeping up with politics is a reason they use it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Some see political content, but few post it.<\/strong> Among users, 45% see at least some political content on TikTok, but only 7% post at least some themselves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Users have mixed views on TikTok and democracy.<\/strong> More users say it\u2019s mostly good (33%) than mostly bad (17%) for American democracy. Still, 49% say there\u2019s no impact. Republican users are slightly more likely than Democratic users to say it\u2019s bad (22% vs. 15%). (Throughout this report, both groups include independents who lean toward each party.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Most TikTok users think people feel free to express political views there.<\/strong> The vast majority (86%) say so. For example, Democratic users are more likely than Republican users to say keeping up with politics and political issues is a reason they use TikTok (40% vs. 33%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"seeing-politics-on-tiktok-nbsp\">Seeing politics on TikTok&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just under half of TikTok users say that at least some of what they see on the site is about politics or political issues. Just 7% of users say they post or share at least some content that is political in nature. width:205px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, the majority of TikTok users (63%) say they don\u2019t post or share anything on the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By party<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar shares of Democratic (7%) and Republican (8%) users report sharing at least some political content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-do-people-post-about-politics-on-tiktok\">Why do people post about politics on TikTok?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We asked the 12% of TikTok users who share at least a little political content there about four potential reasons for doing so.[4.numoffset=&#8221;4&#8243; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also wanted to find out why those who <em>don\u2019t<\/em> share about politics on the site forego doing so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the 24% of TikTok users who post, but <em>never<\/em> about politics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>56% say a reason is that <strong>they<\/strong> <strong>don\u2019t care about politics.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>47% feel <strong>politics doesn\u2019t belong on TikTok.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>42% say a reason is that posting on TikTok <strong>won\u2019t make a difference.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>35% say a reason they don\u2019t post political content on TikTok is because <strong>they<\/strong> <strong>don\u2019t want to be criticized or harassed.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;how-tiktok-users-see-its-climate-and-impact&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-tiktok-users-see-its-climate-and-impact\">How TikTok users see its climate and impact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TikTok has made efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tiktok-announces-tools-to-address-unkind-comments-2021-3\">curb harassment on its platform<\/a>. This is roughly double the share of users who say it\u2019s mostly bad (17%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the largest share of users (49%) say that TikTok has no impact on American democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By party<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democratic users are more likely than Republican users to say the platform is mostly good for democracy (36% vs. 29%). Our survey finds that 86% of TikTok users think people feel free to openly state their political views on the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just 12% say people do <em>not<\/em> feel free to express these kinds of views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By party<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large majorities of Republican and Democratic users agree that people can freely express political views on TikTok.
