For this analysis, we surveyed 8,709 adults, including 7,166 registered voters, from April 8 to 14, 2024. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. Yet in many cases, Biden and Trump supporters are themselves sharply divided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across more than 30 measures, some of the widest differences are on issues that have divided Americans for decades: the role of guns in society, as well as race and the legacy of slavery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, Biden and Trump supporters also have very different opinions across many other topics likely to be focal points in the campaign: gender identity and sexual orientation, crime and policing, reproductive issues, the influence of religion on society and the changes that have transformed life in the U.S. in recent decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new survey by Pew Research Center of 8,709 adults \u2013 including 7,166 registered voters \u2013 conducted April 8-14, 2024, examines the political values of the Biden and Trump coalitions that underlie policy attitudes in many of these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jump to read about Biden and Trump supporters\u2019 views on:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/06\/06\/racial-attitudes-and-the-2024-election\/\">Race and racial diversity<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/06\/06\/immigration-attitudes-and-the-2024-election\/\">Immigration and language<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/06\/06\/america-its-history-and-the-2024-election\/\">American history<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/06\/06\/gender-family-reproductive-issues-and-the-2024-election\/\">Gender and family<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/06\/06\/gender-identity-sexual-orientation-and-the-2024-election\/\">Gender identity and sexual orientation<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/06\/06\/religious-values-and-the-2024-election\/\">Religion<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/06\/06\/crime-policing-and-the-2024-election\/\">Crime and policing<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/06\/06\/gun-attitudes-and-the-2024-election\/\">Guns<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the major findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Enduring divisions on race and the legacy of slavery.<\/strong> Just 27% of <em>registered voters who support <\/em>Trump say the legacy of slavery affects the position of Black people in America today a great deal or fair amount; 73% say it has little or no impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opinions among Biden supporters are nearly the opposite: 79% say slavery\u2019s legacy still affects the position of Black people, while 20% say it has not too much or no effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wide gaps on gender identity and same-sex marriage.<\/strong> While Americans have <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2022\/06\/28\/americans-complex-views-on-gender-identity-and-transgender-issues\/\">complex opinions on gender identity and transgender rights<\/a>, a growing share of voters (65%) say that whether a person is a man or woman is determined by the sex they were assigned at birth. About a third (34%) say someone can be a man or woman, even if that differs from their sex at birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nearly all Trump supporters (90%) say gender is determined by sex at birth. By contrast, Biden supporters are more divided. About six-in-ten (59%) say gender can be different from sex at birth; 39% say gender is determined by sex at birth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nearly a decade after <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/marriage-anthony-kennedy-ohio-state-government-united-states-tennessee-9dc57b83f3ae2fc7d2e007aa80bf33a3\">the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage<\/a>, Biden and Trump supporters have starkly different views of the impact of that historic ruling. Biden supporters are about five times as likely (57%) as Trump supporters (11%) to say legalization of same-sex marriage is good for society.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=170448\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eae8e2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eae8e2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PP_2024.6.5_cultural-values_00-02.png?resize=480,441 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PP_2024.6.5_cultural-values_00-02.png?resize=620,570 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"285\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PP_2024.6.5_cultural-values_00-02.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Sharp divide between Biden and Trump supporters over the need to deport undocumented immigrants in the U.S.\" class=\"wp-image-170448 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most Trump voters now favor a \u201cnational effort to deport\u201d all those in the U.S. illegally.<\/strong> Opposition to allowing undocumented immigrants to stay in the country legally if they meet certain requirements has risen in recent years, driven largely by Republican and Republican-leaning registered voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nearly two-thirds of Trump backers (63%) support a national effort to deport all those in the country illegally, compared with just 11% of Biden supporters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=170449\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e6e2d2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e6e2d2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PP_2024.6.5_cultural-values_00-03.png?resize=480,660 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PP_2024.6.5_cultural-values_00-03.png?resize=620,852 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"426\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PP_2024.6.5_cultural-values_00-03.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows How Biden and Trump supporters view legal abortion, access to contraception\" class=\"wp-image-170449 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Divided views of the criminal justice system. <\/strong>A majority of voters (61%) say the criminal justice system is generally \u201cnot tough enough on criminals.\u201d Just 13% say the system is too tough, while 25% say it treats criminals about right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trump supporters (81%) are about twice as likely as Biden supporters (40%) to say the criminal justice system is not tough enough on criminals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yet, there are much narrower differences in several priorities for the police and law enforcement: Overwhelming majorities of Biden and Trump supporters say it is extremely or very important for police and law enforcement to keep communities safe and to treat people of all racial and ethnic groups equally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The changing American family. <\/strong>The structure of American family is <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2023\/09\/14\/the-modern-american-family\/\">very different than it was 40 or 50 years ago<\/a>. Biden and Trump supporters view these changes very differently:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Roughly three times as many Trump supporters as Biden supporters say society is better if people prioritize marriage and family (59% vs. 19%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And Trump supporters are far more likely to take a negative view of the nation\u2019s falling birth rate: 47% say people having fewer children is a bad thing, compared with 23% of Biden supporters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Divisions on abortion, more agreement on availability of contraceptives. <\/strong>Since the Supreme Court\u2019s 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed a right to abortion, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/05\/13\/broad-public-support-for-legal-abortion-persists-2-years-after-dobbs\/\">support for legal abortion has ticked up<\/a> in both parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Today, 88% of Biden supporters say abortion should be legal in all or most cases; 38% of Trump supporters say the same.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, voters \u2013 including large majorities of both candidates\u2019 supporters \u2013 overwhelmingly say the wide availability of birth control pills, condoms and other forms of contraception is good for society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Broad support among voters for discussing America\u2019s historical successes \u2013 and its flaws.<\/strong> The survey finds that while Biden and Trump supporters have profoundly different attitudes on many cultural issues, they mostly support the discussion of America\u2019s historical successes, as well as its flaws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nearly identical shares of Biden (74%) and Trump supporters (71%) say it is extremely or very important to have public discussions about the country\u2019s historical successes and strengths.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>78% of Biden supporters and 60% of Trump supporters say it is at least very important to have public discussions about the country\u2019s failures and flaws.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=170450\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e7e3d5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e7e3d5;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PP_2024.6.5_cultural-values_00-04.png?resize=480,483 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PP_2024.6.5_cultural-values_00-04.png?resize=620,624 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"312\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/PP_2024.6.5_cultural-values_00-04.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Most Biden and Trump supporters express positive views of more people openly discussing mental health\" class=\"wp-image-170450 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Voters are very positive about more open discussions of mental health.<\/strong> More than eight-in-ten voters (87%) say that more people openly discussing mental health and well-being is good for society. This includes large majorities of both Biden (94% good thing) and Trump supporters (79%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related:<\/em><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/05\/02\/who-do-americans-feel-comfortable-talking-to-about-their-mental-health\/\"><em>Who do Americans feel comfortable talking to about their mental health?<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There is broad skepticism about the increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) in daily life.<\/strong> More than half of voters (55%) say this is bad for society, while 21% see this as a good thing (24% say it is neither good nor bad). Still, three-quarters of voters say they are comfortable with women <em>not <\/em>taking their husbands names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump supporters are less comfortable than Biden supporters with women not taking their husbands\u2019 last names. And among men who support the former president, 44% are <em>uncomfortable <\/em>with this practice, compared with 29% of women who support Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a wider gap between Biden and Trump voters in comfort with people speaking a language other than English in public places in their communities. More than eight-in-ten Biden supporters (83%) are comfortable hearing languages other than English, compared with a narrow majority of Trump supporters (54%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, reflecting the wide divide between the two sides in opinions on transgender issues, just 20% of Trump supporters say they are comfortable with someone using \u201cthey\/them\u201d instead of \u201che\u201d or \u201cshe\u201d to describe themselves. More than three times as many Biden supporters (66%) \u2013 including 79% of Biden supporters under age 50 \u2013 say they are comfortable with the use of these gender-neutral
