Asian Americans\u2019 experiences with discrimination in their daily lives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Asian Americans experience discrimination in many parts of their day-to-day lives. In the survey, we asked Asian American adults if they have ever experienced discrimination or been treated unfairly because of their race or ethnicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to this broad question, we also asked whether they have experienced specific discrimination incidents in their everyday life. Across different ethnic origin groups, 67% of Korean adults have experienced racial discrimination from time to time or regularly, higher than Vietnamese, Filipino and Indian adults.\" class=\"wp-image-124003 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About six-in-ten Asian adults (58%) say they have ever experienced racial discrimination or been treated unfairly because of their race or ethnicity. This includes 53% of Asian adults who say they have experienced racial discrimination from time to time and 5% who say they experience it regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether Asian adults say they have experienced racial discrimination varies across some demographic groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ethnic origin:<\/strong> 67% of Korean adults say they have experienced racial discrimination, higher than the shares among Vietnamese (57%), Filipino (55%) and Indian (50%) adults.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nativity:<\/strong> U.S.-born Asian adults are more likely than immigrants to say they have experienced racial discrimination, 65% versus 55%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Immigrant generation:<\/strong> 69% of Asian immigrants who are 1.5 generation \u2013 those who came to the U.S before they were 18 years old \u2013 say they have ever experienced racial discrimination. About half of immigrants who traveled to the U.S. as adults (first generation) say the same.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Years in U.S.:<\/strong> 45% of immigrants who arrived in the U.S. in the last decade say they have experienced racial discrimination, compared with 60% of those who have been in the U.S. for more than 20 years.[12. numoffset=&#8221;12&#8243; Other research suggests that place of birth, age at immigration and length of time in the U.S. are linked to perceptions of discrimination. Previous studies have found that those born in the U.S. report experiencing discrimination at higher levels than those who are foreign born; and that those who immigrated at a younger age and have lived in the U.S. for longer periods perceive discrimination at higher levels. Whether Asian adults say they have had this experience is associated with their <strong>experiences with immigration:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>57% of U.S.-born Asian adults say strangers have called them offensive names. They are nearly twice as likely as Asian immigrants (30%) to say this. \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Among immigrants, 54% of Asian adults who immigrated as children (1.5 generation) say they have been called offensive names by strangers, while 20% of those who immigrated as adults (first generation) say the same.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>39% of immigrants who have been in the U.S. for more than two decades say they have been called offensive names. By contrast, 16% of those who immigrated 10 years ago or less say the same.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responses also vary across other demographic groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ethnic origin:<\/strong> 26% of Indian adults say strangers have called them offensive names, a <em>lower<\/em> share than other origin groups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regional origin: <\/strong>This pattern is also echoed among regional origin groups. Among South Asian adults overall, 29% say they have been called offensive names, compared with higher shares of East (41%) and Southeast (39%) Asian adults.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Age:<\/strong> About four-in-ten Asian adults under 50 years old say they have been called offensive names, compared with 33% of those 50 to 64 and 25% of those 65 and older.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Race:<\/strong> 50% of Asian adults who identify with two or more races \u2013 that is, those who identify as Asian in addition to at least one other race \u2013 say they have been called offensive names by strangers during day-to-day encounters. In comparison, 36% of those who are single race \u2013 those who identify as Asian and no other race \u2013 say the same.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the survey, we also asked Asian Americans whether they have ever <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/09\/11\/among-asian-americans-us-born-children-of-immigrants-are-most-likely-to-have-hidden-part-of-their-heritage\/\">hidden part of their heritage<\/a> \u2013 including cultural customs, food, clothing or religious practices \u2013 from non-Asians. Whether Asian Americans have hidden their culture is associated with their experiences of being called offensive names:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>60% of Asian adults who have hidden their heritage say they have also been called offensive names by strangers, compared with 32% of those who have <em>not <\/em>hidden part of their heritage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"in-their-own-words-asian-americans-experiences-of-being-called-slurs-and-offensive-names\">In their own words: Asian Americans\u2019 experiences of being called slurs and offensive names<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-callout has-beige-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-note-to-readers\">A note to readers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This section contains racial slurs and other terms that may be offensive to readers. Quotations have been lightly edited for grammar, spelling and clarity, but we have chosen not to censor language out of respect to those who agreed to share their personal experiences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 2021 focus groups of Asian Americans, many participants talked about their experiences being <strong>bullied<\/strong>, <strong>harassed<\/strong> <strong>or<\/strong> <strong>called offensive names<\/strong> because of their race or ethnicity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-default has-global-padding is-content-justification-center is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-90b4cc35 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs an Indian female, we tend to be very hairy \u2026 starting very young, so in sixth and seventh grade I was super hairy and so all the other girls would be like, \u2018Oh my god, are you like shaving already? Or what\u2019s going on with that?\u2019 And then people would call me, \u2018Sand N-word.\u2019 A lot of just like, \u2018Saddam\u2019s daughter,\u2019 just like those types of words.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right sans-serif wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013U.S.-born woman of Indian origin in late 30s<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-default has-global-padding is-content-justification-center is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-90b4cc35 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first time that I can ever remember experiencing racism and discrimination was when I was 3. I was on the playground \u2026 and I was playing with this White girl and then her mom came \u2026 [and] was just like, \u2018Don\u2019t play with that chink,\u2019 and I didn\u2019t know how to take that at the time. What\u2019s wrong with them? Don\u2019t they know that the service entrance is in the rear?\u2019 \u2026 I heard her mother correct her on the spot, but \u2026 that\u2019s just one example of many, that much racism I\u2019ve had when I\u2019ve interracially dated. \u2026 I just shut my mouth. I didn\u2019t retaliate. This includes 18% who say strangers have acted as if they were dishonest and 12% who say people have acted as if they were afraid of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are differences across some Asian origin groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ethnic origin:<\/strong> 37% of those who collectively belong to less populous Asian origin groups (those categorized as some \u201cother\u201d origin in this report) say they have had at least one of these experiences. I mean, this is not a joke. This is every time I travel. She was like, \u2018It\u2019s just not fair that we\u2019re being punished for something that your people did,\u2019 or something. \u2026 I was in first grade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right sans-serif wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013U.S.-born woman of Pakistani origin in mid-20s<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other participants talked about <strong>other physical attacks<\/strong> or ways they and their family had to <strong>change their behavior:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-default has-global-padding is-content-justification-center is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-90b4cc35 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen a friend of mine and I were on the way to work during the week the 9\/11 incident had taken place, we were assaulted with eggs. \u2026 But other local people helped us, they chased after the car that attacked us with eggs. He did it by accident.\u2019 \u2026 [T]o this day, we knew it was like more racially motivated just because we\u2019re the only Pakistani family in the neighborhood, but they deemed it an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right sans-serif wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013U.S.-born man of Pakistani origin in early 20s<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-callout has-beige-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"backlash-against-muslims-sikhs-arabs-and-south-asians-post-9-11\">Backlash against Muslims, Sikhs, Arabs and South Asians post-9\/11<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the Sept. 11 attacks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/combating-post-911-discriminatory-backlash-6\">discrimination against Muslims, Sikhs, Arabs, South Asians<\/a> and others perceived to be part of these groups in the U.S. increased. Amid concern about national security among government officials and the general public alike, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanbar.org\/groups\/crsj\/publications\/human_rights_magazine_home\/human_rights_vol38_2011\/human_rights_winter2011\/9-11_transformation_of_us_immigration_law_policy\/\">significant changes in immigration law and policy<\/a>, including the formation the Department of Homeland Security, the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/archive\/ag\/speeches\/2002\/060502agpreparedremarks.htm\">National Security Entry-Exit Registration System<\/a> and the passage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/107\/plaws\/publ56\/PLAW-107publ56.htm\">USA\/PATRIOT Act<\/a>, among others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Muslim Americans faced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/post-9-11-surveillance-has-left-a-generation-of-muslim-americans-in-a-shadow-of-distrust-and-fear\">increased scrutiny and surveillance<\/a>. Other religious and ethnic groups also became targets of discrimination incidents and hate crimes, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/06\/us\/shooting-reported-at-temple-in-wisconsin.html\">2012 mass shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anti-Muslim sentiment and scrutiny has continued in recent years and continues to touch the lives of Muslims, Sikhs, Arabs and South Asians living in the U.S. Previous Pew Research Center surveys have found that from 2007 to 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/09\/01\/muslims-are-a-growing-presence-in-u-s-but-still-face-negative-views-from-the-public\/\">increasing shares of Muslim Americans<\/a> said they have personally experienced discrimination. Across major racial and ethnic groups, Black adults were the most likely to say they have been unfairly stopped by the police because of their race or ethnicity. Compared with other origin groups, they are less likely to say they have been turned down for a job (5%) or denied a promotion (4%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Immigrant generation:<\/strong> Among those born in the U.S., 27% of third- or higher-generation Asian Americans say they have experienced at least one of three incidents of workplace discrimination, while 17% among the second generation say the same. About 13% of those in third or higher generations say they have been fired from a job because of their race or ethnicity, compared with 5% of second-generation Asian adults who say the same.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gender:<\/strong> Asian men are slightly more likely than Asian women to say they have been denied a promotion because of their race or ethnicity (16% vs. 11%). The following findings are related to some of the survey findings on Asian immigrants\u2019 experiences of discrimination in the workplace:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"font-size:14px\" class=\"has-sans-serif-font-family wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many participants pointed to their difficulties speaking in English as a major reason they struggled to find employment. For example, many discussed struggling in interviews or feeling like they did not receive callbacks due to their language ability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some participants shared that once employed, language barriers slowed their professional success and advancement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participants also noted that their accents when speaking English affected how they were treated at work, including having their co-workers or customers treat them differently or missing out on opportunities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;quality-of-service-in-restaurants-and-stores&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"quality-of-service-in-restaurants-and-stores\">Quality of service in restaurants and stores<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four-in-ten Asian adults say they have received poorer service than other people at restaurants or stores. There is a long history of banning Asians from land ownership in the United States. <a href=\"https:\/\/immigrationhistory.org\/item\/alien-land-laws-in-california-1913-1920\/\">Alien land laws<\/a> emerged in some states in 1913. There has been recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/08\/28\/1196453975\/slew-of-new-landownership-bills-are-reminiscent-of-anti-asian-alien-land-laws\">legislation aiming to revive these laws<\/a> in some states in 2023.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asian Americans\u2019 experiences of housing and social discrimination in neighborhoods differs across some demographic factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nativity: <\/strong>16% of U.S.-born Asian adults say neighbors have made life difficult for them or their family, compared with 10% of Asian immigrants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Immigrant generation: <\/strong>Third-generation Asian Americans (9%) are more likely than the second generation and all Asian immigrants to say they have been prevented from moving into a neighborhood by a landlord or realtor because of their race or ethnicity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Income: <\/strong>9% of Asian adults with family incomes of less than $30,000 say they have been prevented from moving into a neighborhood by a landlord or realtor due to their race or ethnicity, compared with about 5% or fewer among those who make $30,000 or more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most Asian Americans experience discrimination in many parts of their day-to-day lives.
