There is widespread skepticism among the public when it comes to issues of scientific integrity.<\/p>\n\n<h4 id=\"overall-views\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overall views<\/h4>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-122748\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/science\/2019\/08\/02\/findings-at-a-glance-medical-research-scientists\/ps_08-02-19_trust-in_-scientists_ataglance2-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dbe0e5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dbe0e5;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"848\" height=\"1100\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/07\/PS_08.02.19_trust.in_.scientists_ataglance2.png?resize=480,623 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/07\/PS_08.02.19_trust.in_.scientists_ataglance2.png?resize=782,1014 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/07\/PS_08.02.19_trust.in_.scientists_ataglance2.png?resize=848,1100 848w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-122748 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/07\/PS_08.02.19_trust.in_.scientists_ataglance2.png\" alt=\"About four-in-ten Americans say medical researchers do a good job all or most of the time\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>68%<\/strong> of Americans have a positive view of medical research scientists.<\/p>\n\n<h4 id=\"trust-and-mistrust\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trust and mistrust<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About one-third or more U.S. adults say medical researchers do a good job conducting research (43%), care about the public\u2019s best interests (35%) and provide fair and accurate information (32%) all or most of the time.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But few Americans believe medical researchers are usually open about potential conflicts of interest with industry groups (15%) or take responsibility for mistakes (13%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About half (48%) think research misconduct is at least a moderately big problem; only 13% believe medical researchers face serious consequences for misconduct all or most of the time.<\/p>\n\n<h4 id=\"other-notable-findings\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other notable findings<\/h4>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People who are more familiar with medical researchers and those with higher levels of factual science knowledge are more trusting of medical researchers. For example, those who report knowing <em>a lot<\/em> about the work of medical researchers are more likely than those who know nothing to say medical scientists usually do a good job conducting research (61% vs. 24%).<\/li>\n<li>Adults ages 50 and older tend to have more positive and trusting views of medical researchers than do those 18 to 49. For instance, about two-thirds (65%) of adults 50 and older say that medical doctors care about the best interests of their patients all or most of the time, compared with about half (49%) of those under age 50.<\/li>\n<li>Black (59%) and Hispanic (60%) adults are more likely than whites (42%) to consider research misconduct among medical scientists to be at least a moderately big problem.<\/li>\n<li>Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/science\/2019\/08\/02\/americans-generally-view-medical-professionals-favorably-but-about-half-consider-misconduct-a-big-problem\">less likely to have trusting views<\/a> of medical researchers than of medical doctors. For example, 57% of Americans say doctors care about the best interests of their patients all or most of the time, compared with 35% for medical research scientists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-callout has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><h4 id=\"about-the-survey\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the survey<\/h4><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nationally representative survey from Pew Research Center was conducted among U.S. adults ages 18 and older. About half of the survey respondents (N=2,226) were asked about medical research scientists; these responses have a margin of sampling error of +\/- 2.7 percentage points. Before answering questions about this group, respondents were given the following brief description: \u201c<strong>Medical research scientists<\/strong> conduct research to investigate human diseases
