The law aims to level the playing field between local media and global tech companies that operate in the country, including Meta and Google.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/glitch-code-google-meta-fight-over-news-canada-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australia and Canada<\/a>\u00a0have taken similar steps in the past couple of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About three-quarters of Indonesians (78%) <strong>use the internet<\/strong> at least occasionally, including 96% of adults ages 18 to 39, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/02\/05\/8-charts-on-technology-use-around-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>. A similar share (76%) <strong>own a smartphone<\/strong>, and 73% <strong>use social media sites<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"new-from-pew-research\">\ud83d\udea8 <strong>New from Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pew Research Center<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>John S. and James L.
