The state laws reflect growing claims by conservatives of \u201ccensorship\u201d on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/05\/13\/support-for-more-regulation-of-tech-companies-has-declined-in-u-s-especially-among-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 Center survey<\/a>, majorities across political parties and ideologies believe social media sites engage in political censorship, but <strong>this view is especially widespread among Republicans.<\/strong> Around nine-in-ten Republicans (92%), including GOP leaners, say it is very or somewhat likely that social media sites intentionally censor political viewpoints that they find objectionable, compared with 66% of Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"chart-of-the-week\">\ud83d\udcca&nbsp;<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s chart comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/02\/23\/majorities-in-most-countries-surveyed-say-social-media-is-good-for-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a recent analysis<\/a> of how people in 27 countries view social media&#8217;s impact on democracy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Majorities in 20 countries surveyed say social media has benefited democracy in their nation, especially in emerging economies like Nigeria and Mexico \u2013 where nearly eight-in-ten say this.
